Looking at buying a bike in U.S from a dealer & touring around, Sturgis etc..... & eventually importing back here. Bike will be under 2 years old BTW.

    Has anybody done this before?

Can anybody give me an insight on any tips, tricks, insurance, what not to do etc.

Cheers for any input in advance.

Plenty on this topic in thread in this section.. I went through the import capper ,, but found , (what I thought), was a good deal, on a local bike without having to go through importing.. Of course it depends on what model bike your after , ie, a model that's not sold here,, or a CVO model..

This is my take on the import exercise , (regarding late model bikes),,from my own research , and talking to people that have done it ,, and do it regularly ..

    1. Having a trusted friend, (hopefully into Harleys) in the USA. A big plus when it comes to rego,, insurance ,, and looking for bikes.
    2. Buy from dealer , or private sale ,,,, your choose ,,,, That's where your friend comes in handy.
    3. Bike to be as stock as possible ..
    4. Get it shipped over ,, a couple of guys on here will help you with that ,, and RAWS..
    5. The clincher ,,, If you are not buying and riding the bike in the states ,, (which you are) , in my opinion ,, forget it !!!

A saving of $4000 -- 6000 , not renting a bike, can tip the scales in favour of importing it back home ..

You have item 5 ,, if you have item 1 ,, then I would be doing more research !!! Good luck..

PS.. Nearly forgot ,,, if you do follow through importing,, when you do buy the bike of your choose,, you don't just buy it , you have to steal the fucking thing !!!!

I imported one about two years ago .
Was a worthwhile exercise and I'd do it again.
I seem to remember there are different rules (as in saving on GST and stamp duty) if you have owned the bike for more than a year .
You may be able to work something there depending on the length of your stay there or making up the difference in storage .

    Thanks for reply guys.
My plan is to buy a RKC before I get there (get it inspected before purchase obviously), ride around for a few weeks & then bring it back home to W.A. Going to ask Chopaweeza to do this for me when it eventuates.
Was going to buy one over here shortly, but now going to U.S might as well buy one over there & save on rental.
I have read all of pages for importing bikes & did get alot out of it. But a couple of unanswered Q's though:

    1. Is there a "transfer fee" over in U.S for when you purchase the bike.
    2. Can bike insurance be obtained for tourists like me on purchased bikes on short stays.
