going to do the 16K service on my 2014 SG with the help of 666 and wondering what are the best oils to use on these new Rushmore engines. I will be changing all 3 oils and have heard good things about Redline heavy duty shock proof for the gearbox. Not sure about engine and primary. Yes I know oil topics have been done many times but just wanting the latest advice,

thanks Robots and yeah Paul I saw a post on here about the Redline, does it help the clunking and finding neutral easier. I think I put Mobil one in the Heritage I had.

Steve i personally think so. But as with most Harley boxes you can get clunks and bangs regardless of the oil. I also use lucas  oil in the primary and have not had any issues, will use it again next oil change

Steve you are aware that you will void your warranty if you do the oil change and are not a lic mechanic?

I have a mate who has a fatboy under warranty and he was told by the dealer that a minor service was okay but not the major service. I am pretty confident that with 16000ks on her she should be fine, thanks Paul.

You won't void your void your warranty doing an oil change if you are not a licenced mechanic - document when it was done with the millage and have receipts for the fluids and follow the recommended service procedures as per the manual.

I have had been riding and servicing these American tractors for over 40 years and the oil debate still continues. Read your owners or workshop manual and use the recommended oil or use an equivalent or higher spec oil - your call. I have used Redline in the tranny and other gear oils both mineral and synthetic, used the recommended engine oil including the recommended diesel oil and a variety of others including automotive oils. And they all work....

When you analyse all the costs/arguments and opinions you still won't have an answer so it is personal choice...........my personal choice is Syn3 in all three holes....why:
1. One oil to buy
2. It is recommended by HD
3. Finding neutral is easy
4. Syn3 is cheap compared to some of the other oils such as Redline which can cost a small fortune
5. I use HD oil filters and gaskets and buy all of these items at the same time as when I buy the oil so you don't have to go to different outlets etc

I don't know where companies get off by making these statements but FFS, the above statement on the Richardson site is complete and utter crap.

Do your oil change, check what has to be checked for the 16k service, record what you checked, when it was done and all will be good -you will probably do a better job than any dealer as it is your pride and joy and you also learn to know your bike in detail.

Steve L - Syn3 is a recommended HD oil for all three holes which is reasonably priced and it does the job! Fucking around with three different oils is a pain in the bum and unnecessary.

thanks fellas and I have decided to go ahead and do it myself with the help of Rich. As for warranty issues I would probably be screwed anyway as it has the V & H pro pipe, SE heavy breather and race tuner. If I do have an issue I would find out what caused it and if not relevant to what I have done I would be hitting GA up as they fitted all the above parts and sold me the bike with a safety certificate. I ended up buying Mobil 1 V Twin oil and Amsoil 75 / 110 gear oil.

You be right steveL, you wont look back and before you know it the warranty will be expired, my Toyota Lexcen has 260,114kms on it now and still going strong, no warranty claims, i just done service last couple of days, easy as

cheers robots and yeah I am confident it will be fine. I do ride her a bit fast but not hard, there is a big difference.
