I'm planning a road trip

I thought i'd post this in here as the 'roat trip' section has 4 posts so will no doubt get no responses.
Basically I'm planning on riding from Sydney to Melbourne and back, taking it slowly each way with a few stop overs and doing to Great Ocean Road when i'm down there. The trip should be between 10th of dec and the 20th ish...

I plan to take this route:

What i'm after is any recommendations from those who have done the trip i.e.
    • Good camping spots / places to stay
    • Must see sights
    • Spots where fuel might become an issue (riding a Forty Eight and only get around 80km out of a tank in the city)

If anyone would be keen to go for a ride when i'm down there or show me the sights in the evening, that'd be cool too.

Yeah , as Pauly said . Your route has missed the best bike roads in Aust . Ride through The Snowys and Vic alps .

Oh right, that changes things a little... Maybe i'll do the mountains on the way down and then take the coast back up?

What about the refuelling issue? Will the mountains route pose any problems with that or is it pretty stocked with stations?

No fuel issues depends as well as to how hard you pin that throttle......wink

There is nothing wrong with this route because it gives you the ability to take in some of the lovely little towns on and just off the highway. If you haven't traveled it beforehand you'll enjoy it.

Riding the Sporty you'll appreciate the ability to refuel at many of the small towns, whilst taking in the sights. Places to see and stay should be set to your personal likes. I no longer camp on such a ride because after a day in the saddle I like a comfortable motel room. You may be different.

I like both historical sights and picturesque scenery. It all depends on what want to see or do along the way. Plan your time allowing time to look around so you don't have to rush.

Google maps will give you times and distances, then Google what is in the region of interest to you. Check local visitor information sites.

When you get closer to Melbourne, you may want to get off the freeway and cruise into town via some better bike roads.

That's not too bad a route to take just keep an eye of HWY patrol as its heavily patrolled . Lakes entrance is nice place to stop and stay . Further back Dalmeny off the HWY is a nice little place.

Imo take the Bells line rd to Mt Victoria , then across to Oberon and then into Goulbourn via Taralga and then head south braidwood and then down the Kings Hwy into Batemans bay.Its about another 2.5hrs on your trip but worth the time.

Enjoy the trip ! plenty of fuel stops along both routes

G'day Ninety,, mate I live half way between Sydney and Melbourne,, on the coast,, and I get up to the Snowy area quite often. 80 - 100 per tank !!!!! ,, there is going to be a number of isolated areas where your going to be praying you get to the next servo !!! ie, south of Eden, (on the coast road), and some areas in the Alpine area. If you carry enough fuel to get, say 150km, you should be good,, and enjoy the ride , not worrying about running dry !!!!

You ride what you ride,, you like your bike,, you want a bit of adventure ,,, fuck it ,, go for it .. When you confirm a date ,, (if your going the coast way),, pm me , and I might be able to take you on a couple of roads off the main hwy down my way ... Cheers.. Just one thing,,, you must carry a few gallons of fuel,,,,

Be happy to ride with you too. I'm heading UP from Melbourne on the 4th Dec, taking about 4 days to get to Nimbin, via all the snow roads and twisties, spending a couple of days there, well depends how I feel LOL, then back down coast route sort of, about 10th Dec to 14th. Something like that anyway. May meet up on the way south back to Melbourne??

Yeah i'd already figured that a fuel can would be a mandatory. Will pick one up off eBay today.
I've got a tank off an Iron on the way too, so will give me the extra couple of litres.

Thanks for all your input thus far, I've started plotting a bit of a map of where I think I will be going for the way there at least.
(Check out iOS 'Gas Stations' app if you haven't already... Basically every station apparently - I've been able to plot a lot of those too.)

I'm keen to camp to keep costs down as I'm holidaying properly in January, so any campaign recommendations are welcomed!

TheBigT - shoot me a PM and let's see if we cross paths...

As has been suggested the Alpine road is a must.

Also if you're planning on doing the GAr or the GOR do them on weekdays ;)

if you're looking for extra fuel i'd run two MSR fuel bottles these strapped to your downtubes

Steve - Yep, definitely planning week days for those two... Want to get the best experience out of them.

Just checked out the MSR bottles... Will those be ok in the heat?
I could even roll them up inside my tent bag etc to keep them out of the sun? And save buying the tube mounts...

If you are going to run down the Princess Hwy, swing left down the Bermagui Road and run coasal all the way to Pambula.

More corners, less traffic, cops and B-doubles.

Get fish and chips at Bermagui and thank me later.

Mickle your bike is well set up for touring. What bag is that on your pillion seat which appears to double as a handy backrest for you

Mark - For sure, I loved just being out there on my own, the freedom feeling was incredible.
I think the Byron trip at Easter will be fun with a few mates though. Completely different kind of atmosphere, but fun none the less.
