That said, I just got pulled over by a bike cop on Saturday, and got served with a defect notice. One of the things on the list was the plate holder. He didn't seem super confident on it, but said that they had to be visible in a 180 degree sweep of the back of the bike. He even made a specific note on the defect notice for it to be mounted "Centrally".
He said in a moment of lack of confidence on the subject... "It's pretty possible that a roadworthy tester will just pass it". (hey, thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt, buddy)

I think it's an easy spot from a distance, so he jumped at the chance to compliance test me. They are doing blitzes where I live this time of year though.

I can't remember where the stock indicators mount, but look at the first pic, and check it against your bike, and compare where this HD plate holder would mount on your own ride.

In the meantime, I'll let you know if I have too much trouble roadworthying the new plate holder, but I guess each tester will be different. I spoke to the tester guy over the phone, and he said, yeah, it sounds fine. It's 45 degrees.

    wish me luck :)

Not wanting to p**s on anyone's parade, but someone else also pointed out to me how would my insurance stand.............technically it's an illegal mod in QLD eyes (a Harley dealer on the Gold Coast sells them, but he said you're on your own with the cops) it's not illegal for them to sell those plate holders................

your insurance find out about that mod, would they pay out if god forbid something happened to your bike. It got stolen and recovered and they saw that plate.....................erm food for thought, I'd want it okayed by an insurance assesor too I guess

Hell I have a $30k bike after all

I'd love a side plate but whether it's worth the risk!!!

If the plate can be read at 45° from the plate left, right, up and down its legal.
No insurance probs but you have a good chance of being picked on by the cops.

The older type of side mounts sold by Harley (although can be bought here) are not legal on Aust roads.
I havent seen the new ones mounted so I will not comment on them.

I spoke to 2 different roadworthy guys today. One over the phone who said "no problem with the side mount plate as long as it can be read from 45 degrees either side, (and out of interest indicators not necessarily 35cm's apart, but simply wider than the plate)

The other roadworthy guy I spoke to in person, and he said that the cops are really cracking down on them on the roads, and that they've been audited recently as well in their workshop yard regarding plates. They apparently gave defect notices to customers bikes while in their yard getting other work done...!

I'll let you know how I go with mine getting compliance

PS. The cop who issued my defect notice was so intent on measuring the distance between my rear indicators, that he failed to notice my non existent front fender :)

After the release of the revised document from Vicroads regarding visibility of rear mounted licence plates, it seems that most certified roadworthy guys are either unsure about side mounted plates, or think that eventually they'll be legal, but wanna wait until a few get passed as OK. No one ( and I tried a few road worthy certificate guys) seem to want to be the first place to try and pass one under the new regs.
It's an interesting document to read (check the vicroads link above in a previous post). As it also mentions about rear guard extensions.

Bottom line is that most road worthy places say that the document can be "interpreted" in different ways.

Some guys say, any way you look at it, the document states that you have to have your rear plate centrally mounted.
    You decide.
For now, mine's been changed back to a centrally mounted plate, so it would get passed....and seeing that I prefer my pipes a little louder than legal, I don't want to give the cops a visual reason for them to pull me over and start shopping for other non compliant things on my bike.

It's a shit, but it is what it is.

Far out.. That VicRoads doc is so non specific.. How do they get away with that?! I mean, what does the following mean? It's so broad and open to interpretation

"protect other road users, as far as practicable, against thrown-up stones, mud, ice, snow and water"

The same applies to the front guard laws, extremely open to interpretation.

Until vertical mounts are legal personally I'd pass on it, kind of looks like a street sign hanging off the side of a bike.

My 48 is an import from USA and comes standard with the side mount plate with light etc. Bike passed full roadworthy (blue slip in NSW ) with the side plate and was followed by numerous highway patrol with no problems! Should be able to track one down on ebay!

Vertically mounted plates will never be allowed.
I don't see the point in side mounting a plate horizontally - it looks ugly and worse than the center of the rear fender.
