on a 48 on the tulla freeway, looked completely legal, I rode in the lane next to him diagonally, roughly 45' as stated in the ADR regs and yep the plate was clearly legible.

The plate itself was tucked up nice and tight horizontally under the indicator, looked great..

Anyone have idea what the bracket could be, nearly all I've seen mount off the lower shock mount which is too low and far forward, or it's the HD one which appears a bit bulkier and just that bit too far forward to be legal.

Any on the market Im not aware of?!

It's to the discretion of the copper I suppose. The way I see it, if he gets you for the side mount, whilst he's there get you for the aftermarket pipes, non contained airbox, ground clearance, etc etc.

The fact it's a 3 demerit point offence in NSW puts me off the most.

Yeah its a no no here in SA as well, many have tried but many have had to come back off as well.

Did see a CVO breakout just recently at work from WA which had the side mounted plate just below the left hand rear indicator. I got talking to him about it and he said that he has never been pulled over in WA for it.

Well technically here in vic, as long as its visable from 45' either side (a 90' sweep) it's legal.

I have had a side plate on my sporty for 5 years now, put it on from brand new.

Was told by Harley shop i would be taking it off in no time.

Been pulled over heaps of times for licence check and RBT, cops have not questioned it once.

Last time i was pulled over they booked me for the stock rear gaurd being to short, told them i would take it to court as that was factory, two days later they dropped the case.

Is it legal at all to have them mounted sideways? The only good looking sideplate mounts are sideways anyway, stick out too far otherwise.

Horizontal looks better centre mounted anyway unless you have huge saddlebags to make up for it.

I'm in QLD with a factory HD side mount on my 48 (USA import). I have been pulled over plenty of times, was warned once about it and told of the 45° rule. I have since modded the mount to move it back so it sits under the indicator with the 45° viewing now possible. I have been pulled over since and given the automatic "hey side mounts are illegal" from the copper. But when shown the mod they agreed and were all cool.

When im back home i'll take some photos. I cut the original mount up to remove the light and rotating part the number plate bolts to, then made a new bracket that bolts to the side of gaurd at the rear where the support bracket is underneath. Anyway I'll post pics when I can.

to the best of my understanding this is the case. as long as its viewable across the rear tyre like that.

Someone told me that HD have released a newer version of the side mount plate, that sits further back, as to meet compliance.

Terrorist one might be able to confirm it, as he just installed a side mounted plate holder for me that looks the business. I'm not sure if he had to mod it or not, but it sits further back.

I cut the number plate mount off the original HD bracket, made a new bracket that bolts to the support strap at the back under the rear guard. Photos aren't very good, and excuse the surface rust. I need to take it off after the mock-up and paint it.

I saw a Sporty here in Perth riding along with a side mounted plate which included the light. I doubt he will be riding it long though once he's pulled up, shame as it looked cool.
