Can anyone out there tell me what the go is if i fit my bike back with big radius V&H after inspection by EPA..tested with stock exhaust and obviously passed so as far as EPA records show i have not been deemed as non compliant so TECHNICALY i have not commited any offence.. is this a loop hole? Interesting..are there any opinions or facts on this from anyone who knows someone who has done this.

i havent put the pipes back on, i am just asking what would maybe happen if i did. The notice never requested that i take the bike to them with the pipes i had on when pulled over...being an experienced forum user yourself would you advise i withdraw the post, and yes you are right one doesnt know who is monitoring the sight, nor do i wish to get anyone in strife including myself.thanks mate for the advice- respects to you

thanks for that fatbat but s&s will also be frowned apon by the local officer..aftermarket-doesnt belong on the bike he will say, ive ordered the screamin eagle shorty dual slip ons as at the very least they are genuine HD..mate was given a reprieve after being pulled over and arguing the fact they were harley davidson geniune product-same day same copper lit him go. HD sell and advertise them as street legal and EPA stamped. yes much quieter than V&H but better than stock i guess-apparently they have a note to them..any opinion on that anyone..running them from a 1584 softail

Maybe this thread should be deleted, Rodders?

There is absolutely zero risk to you posting about this on a forum, unless you also post pictures of your numberplate on this forum, or elsewhere with the same username.

    Stress less.

Also, yes they're likely to treat you harsher next time as your history will show you've been recalled for the same thing.

Yeah, agree with dkNigs on this one. you can ponder as many questions as you like without incriminating yourself, until you admit to doing something or provide proof. Which is also easy to do. And yes, authorities peruse forums all the time.

As for pipes - the inspecting shop is not responsible for what you do after they test the bike. They can only vouch for what they saw, and have no way of stopping you changing things later. So they're covered that way.

I agree with dkNigs again - if you continue to get EPA'd then they'll get suspicious and won't give you as much benefit of the doubt.

Can't you get baffles for the big radius that will bring them within limits?

Flipdog, this is only something that you can work out.

We all know what the regulations are regarding noise levels for cars & motor cycles are yet we choose to take a chance by exceeding the permitted levels. There is also the associated issue of emission control by the exhaust system.

The EPA testing stations are inundated with modified cars and bikes that have been returned to legal specifications simply for the test. The testers as well as the police know what happens once you are directed to attend a station. It is like a chess game. You have to work out if you can accept the consequences for your decisions.

You can approach the testers for first hand information about the setups that are available to you so you can stay within regulations. A lot depends on where you are, local enforcement and associated attitudes.

This is a general response to your question, so as Rodders said, specifics are not going to be shared.

For the record, I have two sets of mufflers.

Read your posts and feel your pain. Have you considered a noise adjustable exhaust such as the Patriot Defender? Google it and have a look. I have one for my softail as I needed it to keep my neighbours happy when I was working shift work. I'd have the bike running stock quiet at start up until I putted out of the neighbourhood and then open the valve wide open. I've done the same in reverse with police and had nil problems. Mines sitting in the garage as I put my v&h big radius pipes back on as not doing shift work. But they were still too noisy for my own liking until I bought and fitted a pair of big city thunder monster qq baffles which took the harsh bark out of them and deepened the sound. They're still loud and illegal but much better.

I hope this gives you some other ideas.

I've had the V&H Big Shot Staggered for a year now. Ran them with standard, straight through baffles, then installed the V&H Quiet baffles, and have now just added the Smartpartz HardKore Quiet Baffles.

Apparently the V&H Quiet baffles claim a 3 to 6db drop in volume, and the Smartpartz promise a further 6 to 12db drop. I don't think either do as much as they claim but with running BOTH baffles at the same time, my pipes have quietened a lot. I think they are now on par with the latest screaming eagle slip on's but have a better "growl" sound. I just couldn't handle the noise of the straight through, or quiet baffles alone. Running the Hard Kore baffles as well gets it down to a volume that I am happy with, but, as always, volume and noise are subjective.

I think this solution is definitely gonna keep me under the radar if I pass random cops and not draw undue attention but unfortunately wouldn't help you in your location because it seems the local police know you and your bike ? I guess what I'm saying is you could try this double baffle solution and see if that quietens it enough that they think you are still complying with the noise regs ? The Hard Kore baffles are around the $100 mark shipped from J&P in the states.

None of this helps, of course, if the cops start looking for aftermarket brands stamped into pipes etc...

Dog, I too feel your pain, I have just gone from V&H big shots to supertrapp supermeg with the adjustable discs. Still gonna muck around with them and see how they go. All good results overseas with both noise and performance. Got it online at a good price and quick delivery; however, sounds like old mate is looking for aftermarket then pulling over. Can't beat dicks like that.
Good luck with with it all.

My suggestion is you get rid of those obscenely loud short shots if you don't want to attract more attention than everybody else.

By the way, screamin eagle engines are usually 110 or 120 cubes depending on the model motor unless yours is modified 110.

    Thanks Fat bat.

110&120 may be the options now, when i purchased the bike in 2011 the options were 103, 113, and 120

    Dog,
The supermeg 2:1 allows for the exhaust to be adjusted by adding or subtracting discs (like a metal o'ring) to the outlet of the exhaust. The way they are constructed will either cut down noise and increase torque (less discs), or up noise and hp (more discs). There is a closed and open end cap. Below is the website for a better explanation. There is also a lot of info on the U.S. forums which will help with what people are running and why.
    Cheers.
