Screamin' Eagle Exhaust Issue

    Hey guys,

I've emailed my dealer this evening about this issue, but wanted to get your opinion on this problem. I had the dealer install a set of Screamin' Eagle Street Cannon exhausts on my 2014 Iron 883 3 months ago. Since then I've done about 1500km. Today after riding I noticed that my chrome on the exhaust is peeling and rusting pretty badly. First off, what do you guys think of the issue (cause etc) and secondly what would you ask the dealer to do if you were in my shoes?

Edit: The picture shows both of the mufflers. It is happening to both.

    Cheers,

    Woz

Yeah , I wouldn't be happy with that, obviously a fault with them, I would be asking for  a replacement or refund , which is well within your rights as a consumer . Give them an opportunity to rectify it. Good luck

Shit chroming job mate caused by sitting in a tank to long before the next procedure. These days where governed by the EPA so the short side of this is shit plating that doesn't last like the old chroming in the 70's. When I was plating in the 70's we used dull copper, bright copper, nickel, then  chrome plating over this base. These days they flash with nickel and then chrome.

Thanks for the replies guys. I had figured as much regarding the chroming. My concern is that if they offer a replacement then it will have the same issue and I'll be back in there 3 months down the track. I figure it isn't just this particular one given both the exhausts have the same issue (and I figured they weren't chromed in the same lot).

Wow. That has to be a warranty claim after only that amount of time, never know , those parts may have been on the shelf a while. I agree with Hog. It looks really thin by the snaps. Its really not liking that allen head isn't it.Yet the Allen looks fine. And I cant tell what that rivets made of cause that even looks a little like electrolysis. The dealer needs to check some earths maybe. Can ya tell what that rivets made of? Anyway ya dealer will definitely sort that under warranty ide imagine on this years model. I was told when I got my widey in July that any accessories I got for it in 90 days was covered by the Harley Davidson warranty if installed at the dealers. Good luck mate .

Can't tell what the rivets are made of mate sorry. So you think it may be some electricity through it causing this?

Dunno mate, to me , there's not that much rust , more flaking chrome and that ring around that allen head( obviously prouder metal than the chrome surrounds) the way its a circle almost even and then don't forget there's another different metal in the rivet stems. That's how many metals in the close proximity. Hard to say. But ya got that looks like good quality chromed allen , then the rivet. then the shit thin chrome. take in the base metals ,rivet stems , prolly shit soft steel so they brake. . all in close proximity and add some water and a minute electrical current. Electrolysis basicly attacks the most inferior metal. If ya threw a handful of copper riverts into the bottom of ya tinny it would eat a hole. Copper against aluminium .Looks like there's a bit goin on close by there.Justa guess . They should be able to put there u bute digital technician onto it and find it .One small current and it will definitely attack the most inferior metal.

Mate , is it one side that's copping the most ? Looks sort of from the snaps its either the headers or the slip ons that are copping it? Remember they are two different quality steels most likely. different chrome. Etc. My point is. no point in a replacement of the same system on those headers or slip on . If that's what's happening. But honestly mate , I would be surprised if they didn't sort it for ya.I don't think you should have any dramas getting a replacement but try another brand. Mate of mines got those mufflers on his softail and they sound good , but if there's issues they might have to go. Just get them to really check it all. Ask questions ,make them aware, the lack of real rust makes me suss.

Update. Dealer got back to me quickly and said it was unacceptable and that they've ordered a new one for me.

So hopefully it won't happen again. They claim this is the first.

Good for you. Better response than the all too common dealer response of, "that's normal". Any more dramas and you should get a refund.

Not knowing anything about the chroming process and what can affect it, it was very interesting reading, then the happy ending.

It was good to read that the dealer came through without a fight. Hope the next lot are better.

The electrolysis idea is interesting. Do you leave your bike on a battery tender?
I just went out to the shed in shorts and bare feet to check some pipe clearances and I brushed against the shock with my bare leg and got a slight tingle.
I did it a few times to check (I'm half cut) and sure enough there is a tingle there and it disappears when I unplug the tender.
    Anyone else had this happen?.
