Sporster compliance date vs year of manufacture

I want to put my sportster on club registration, however the problem is that it has a compliance date of 03/1990. Is it likely that the year of manufacture will be 89? Could harley have built and complied it in 1990?

    Thanks

I'm pretty sure what they go off is the VIN number. For example my 2014 Iron 883 was made in Sept 2013 but the Vin number classes it as a 2014 model which made it I believe as one of the first 2014 models in OZ. If you have your manual it will show you how to read the VIN and describes what it came with and where it was made.

I do have the manual, i didnt know it had it ill have a look thank you.

I checked the tag on the chassis and it says 1/90. Vicroads said they are happy to go off the earliest possible date as long as i can prove it. Though im still out of luck by one month!

I don't believe the compliance date has anything to do with the year of manufacture. Is it an import? It could be any year model and imported/complied any time later.

If it's an Australian delivery bike it's liable to be much closer to the MY like you say, but they're still mutually exclusive. As mentioned above, the VIN will give you the year model.

No it's not an import, as far as i am aware.

The point i was trying to make is that some vehicles/bikes are manufactured many months (sometimes years) prior to compliance. I was hoping that even though it was complied 03/90, it would have been manufactured in late 89. Though according to the tag on the chassis, it was manufactured 01/90.

Oh well, looks like ill have no bike for the summer.

Right. So you want it to be pre 1990 from club rego?

Your Bike is a Import, All Harleys are. it's not made here in Australia, how it works the Australian Compliance Plate is fitted to the Bike once it leaves the Importers hands that why your Bike was built in 1989 but it didn't arrive and get sold until 1990, So it is Plated as a 1990 and recognized as a 1990 . So you carn't get it on Pre 1989 Club Reg, Your VIN Numbers are list at the RTA as a 1990,

Yeah it's aussie delivered. I thought he was asking if it was a private import.

I was hoping it would show evidence of being built in 89 as vic roads would accept it but it doesnt unfortunately. 1/90, 1 month too late.

The club rego in Victoria is suppose to change last quarter of this year from 25 years old eligibility to 30 years.
