Rear indicators on a 48

Anyone tried changing these out for smaller bullet style indicators, or anything other than stock?

Have had a good look around and can't seem to get a difinitive answer as to how to change them out or what lights will work without having to install another light for the brakes. Best I coudl find was a Custom dynamics thingy to control the lights, but that would mean sacrificing the orange/red split for brakes/turn lights.

Any thoughts or tips wou;d be appreciated!

I'm in the US, are all the factory 48's in Aus fitted with the split lens indicator/brake lights?

I've seen people just cut the 'trunk' (for lack of a better term...) off the stock indicators and mount the outer part back on so it's just closer to the frame. Looks alright and will avoid all the issues you mention

you can use some softail stand offs to shorten the "dumbo" look of the indicators, just need a shorter bolt too. Simple mod but looks good.

    Or you can cut it.

You might need to check with your state laws on how far they should be out so they can be noticed more clearly, its a bit like how we can't have a side mounted plate here in most states but in the USA you can. All the bikes we get in at work have the standard indicators to comply with our laws.

I recently changed the rear indicator stand-offs for the shorter softail ones that Brash is talking about. It looks a little better but it was a massive pain in the arse to do! Perhaps its just because i'm an idiot but it took me ages to do and involved removing the rear fender entirely (which meant undoing the top half of the rear shock... which were a pain to get back on without a set of clamps), cutting the wires as the plugs wont fit through the stand-offs and soldering them back together and screwing the new shorter bolts 'from the inside outwards'.
I'm far from any sort of mechanic but I managed to change my bars, internally wire them and swap out all the cables in less time than this mod took.
Probably worth it in the end but only just!

Sorry mate, didn't get any before pics. I used google to get the softail standoff part number and there was a pretty good pic showing one changed and one stock that I came across.

Awesome!, thanks for the advice. I took off one of the indicators this weekend to see what would be involved to just cut it down and it looked like a massive pain in the arse, will check out the standoff idea, thanks Squids!

Check out the indicators on the bike in the link below. Joker machine brake/indicator all in one mini light. Look great!

I'm with Squids on this, got it done but a MASSIVE pain in the arse. Looks good though, the stand offs for other bikes (I got a pair for a dyna) don't just fit, a fair amount of grinding was required then cutting and soldering wires back together, also after grinding the stems spraying them black was a pain.
Will post before and after pics later tonight.

I was trying to work out why mine don't stick out that far, then remembered I have the easy mount kit for grab bar and luggage rack.

Looks good mate.. The dyna ones look like they might be a bit shorter than the softtail ones too.
