Is it possible to successfully powder-coat over the current grey cast rims?

Yeah, I could do that.  I reckon there would be a lot of prep work to be done though.  I was curious if anyone had done such a thing to cast alloy wheels and how they came up.  Phillthy had this to say:

"...Still trying to find a product that will clean the cast mags though. Have tried alot of different things with varied success. The wheels are worst on the leading edge as the grime is forced into the casting. I think the best way is to get them chemically cleaned then powder coated clear, black or whatever colour you like."

As I say, just curios as to how they would come up.

    G'day Blubarb,

I had my alloy rims and drive sprocket powder coated about 12 months ago, and they're still in great condition. No chips or scratches. So it can be done successfully. Had mine done at Ash's Spoked Wheels in Brisbane and recomend their work.

Hey,SGT.  What an incredible looking bike you have there.  What are those amazing looking  pipes you have attached? What mods have you on her?

G'day Matt & Blubarb,  thanks guys.

I've done the following to the bike:

    1) Powder Coated rims

    2) 11" Progressive rear suspension

    3) LePera Bare Bones solo seat

    4) Indicator replacement (Small size)

    5) Short drag bars and taller straight risers.

    6) Relocated Speedo Gauge from Risers to Top Triple Tree.

    7) Standard exhaust with baffles removed, Heat Wrap on Header Pipes.

    8) Blacked out Air Cleaner and a few other chrome bits.

Basically wanted a low style blacked out sporty. Have a few more things to black out and mod yet.  Yeah Matt, would be keen to catch up for a ride one day.

    Nice bike.
I did my sporty rims with wrincle black engine paint looks pretty good even if I do say so myself.
Saved taking the rubber off the wheel and removing bearings etc to get it powder coated as they have to go in the oven.
Done about 8000 k's and no chips or flaking so far.

    SGT,

Damn nice bike, the heat wrap on the headers is a good look and I like the red stripe around the wheels. Rims I've seen powdercoated in the past were all black, yours look much better with the red.

    G'day Philthy,

Mate I can't see the image you posted. (i don't have access to Photobucket on the work computer system).  I think you are asking about the relocation of the Speedo and Tacho.

It was a pretty easy job on the 2004 model. The top triple tree already had holes drilled that were almost the same spacing as the riser hole spacing. It only took a small amount of filing the holes in the gauge bracket, and then making spacers to keep the gauges just above the headlight.  I've attached a close-up pic. Hope it helps.

I think the later model sportys had a different Riser and Gauge bracket set up, that my make it a more difficult job.

Can you powder coat the wrinkle grey primary, gearbox cover and air filter cover on a Nightster. You know how the nightster has that grey wrinkle engine component look. I don't like it as much as if it were black. The replacement covers in Black are around $800, so removal of parts for powder coating would be a better option. Do all these covers have gaskets that would need to be replaced if I removed them. Is ther anything to watch out for if I remove them, like oil spewing out all over the place. i.e. Traps for young players. Any good powder coaters in Sydney or are they much of a muchness?

Ive just put some black flat tracker bars on my bike and really like the look. What preparation do I need to do to black out other chrome pieces?  I was thinkin headlight visor and ring and aircleaner. Would a pressure pack do the job? Steve
