Folks, my interest has been peaked for riding the Snowy Mountains Highway and surrounding area.  I'm looking for some advice and info from riders who know the area.  I'm leaving from Melbourne with no time frame in mind.

    • The most appropriate time to ride it - local weather conditions, road conditions etc
    • Best way to ride it - from the Hume, from the coast or from some other location
    • Good places to see and check out - play Tommy Tourist
    • Inexpensive accommodation - I note there are some cheap cabins in caravan parks (no camping) in some of the towns
    • Road hazards such as highly policed roads or similar
    • Anything else to help make the ride enjoyable

I look forward to your advice and information.

    Cheers,

    Krackers

G'day Krackers ,, There is on the cards a Snowy ride organized by the SA crew in January 2015 , (to be confirmed). They had this ride last year. The ride took in the Vic Alps and NSW Alp areas.
If that doesn't suite, and to answer some of your questions,, I would wait till at least the end of October.. Seeing your coming from Vic , I would ride the Great Alpine Road, ie Mt Hotham, down to Bainsdale ,, follow the hwy north to Cann River ,, up the Cann Valley Hwy to Bombala ,, and carry on to Jindabyne .. Make Jindabyne your base for a couple of nights and explore the Snowy Mountains all the way to Tumut. Go back to Vic via Corryong way. Google all these places, it will make more sense ..

It is the Alpine area , and the weather can change quite rapidly, that being said , just make sure you carry some cold weather gear,,

When riding a bike in the Alpine areas ,, what are good places to see ???? Only one answer.... The whole Fucking area !!!!!
Anything else to make the ride more enjoyable ??? Yep ,, Buy a lot of lemons, and suck them regularly ,,, so that mad fucking smile of yours doesn't scare the natives !!!!!

    Good Luck .....

Late feb is also good, It is pretty much just jam in as many roads as you can in that whole area. I'd probably try and squeeze in the Bonang Hwy as well. If you don't mind a bit a gravel thrown in. Tawonga gap & Falls creek is another way up there via Omeo. Lots of pubs have cheap accomadation and will lock up bike.

. Cops don't seem to have a real annoying presence once you're up in the snowys.

I honestly think you could spend 2 weeks getting there and back no worries at all.

Thanks fellas, the info is just what I was after. Hooking up with the SA crew would be great as well in the new year.
