Sena SMH5-FM Bluetooth Headset

I bought a pair of these headsets a couple of weeks ago, kept one for myself and gave the other one to my old man for Fathers Day. They were easy to set-up with big buttons that are pretty easy to manipulate while riding with gloves on.

I use mine on either a Bell 500 or Rogue and had read reviews that criticised them for poor audio quality and volume, especially when listening to music, but have found the sound to be more than adequate, even over the wind noise with an open face helmet.

I use the boom mic and my old man uses the small wired mic and they are both pretty effective at picking up voices. We have used them in the intercom mode (tested out to about 400m line-of-sight... the box says 700m but I think about 400m is the limit and range is less than 100m if not line-of-sight) and to make phone calls via blutooth and you can hear eachother clearly but may need to raise your voice slightly to be heard well at freeway speeds.

Overall, this is a pretty good headset and I'd recommend it.

    Hi Rodrocket

Have you tried out the 20S yet?  I have been looking at getting them. I've used the SMH10 before and they where excellent.

Let me know your thoughts on them please?

    Cheers

The 20S is bloody good, I've had one for about a year known nothing but good stuff to say about it. Only caution is that it's not as weather resistant as the box implies, it was fine after it dried out but did some weird stuff after I was caught in the rain. Tested the range on a recent trip, mate had an earlier version and we easily got 1.5 km in forested area, no line of sight. Got mine from a place in Perth called Radar Direct, cheapest I could find!
    Hope that helps

I have a sena 20s which I find to be very good I paired it up today with a friend that has a sena 10 worked well
I do find it hard to hear using the speakers supplied a set of ear mould ear buds soon sorted that out
I also find that after a software update the instruction sheet is no good so I downloaded the app and set it all up that way
and as I have computer skills of a garden snail if I can set it up anyone can

Sounds good. I checked out motorcycle gear yesterday online. They have sm5 for $175 or the 10 for $220. I'm wondering if the 10 is worth the extra cash. I've never used any of this stuff before,so anything will be a bonus. Are you able to interchange the unit between helmets or is it a more permanent attachment? I've got quit a few helmets that I interchange, I'm hopeless at impulse buying when I see stuff I don't need at a special price! 7 open face and now 2 full face.

Hey superglide, I bought the 20s duel about a month ago for myself and the wife. Have only used mine for radio/ phone call and Bluetooth music from my phone. Can hear clearly and don't have to yell into the mic. Wife said she couldn't hear any back ground noise when on the the phone to her. Bought mine from https://www.elite-electronics.com.au fast postage.

Thanks mate. I usually ride on my own, as none of my mates ride, I really just want to listen to tunes on the road and maybe field calls if I need to. I might get on a smh10. I've read the slimline R model is not as user friendly as the original 10. I've got XXL hands, so I might opt for the bigger version with the wheel. Should be fun. Nice change from listening to the pipes!

How's the sound quality for speakers with the SMH5? I don't think I need anything more than a smh5, I mostly want it for music. I've found a guy here in Canberra that makes special custom ear plugs for them and does a flashy stereo wired set, which I think I will give a miss. I might get the custom ear plugs, without the stereo bit.
