    Hi guys

Im after a bit of advice on air filter options in heavy rain.

I have an 08 Crossbones overseas and it has vance and hines big radius exhaust and heavy breather filter, also aftermarket cams.

After breaking down a number of times in very heavy rain due to water getting through the rain sock, I even tried 2 rain socks together as i had a spare with me and still no good. Im thinking of going back to a stock type air cleaner set up and wondering about performance. Will the bike need to be retuned, will standard setup let the motor breathe enough. Or is there an alternative aftermarket type aircleaner that will stop water.

New to Harley so any advice you can give will be apreciated.

    Thanks

The oem football cover provides the best rain/protection. And there are some good air filter options for inside it from k&n, Arlen ness and s&s to name a few.

I got the Arlen ness big sucker that's made for the OEM cover (or not if you want to change it up). I've ridden in pissing down rain and didn't have a problem, but its not a complete seal, because you don't have the OEM backing plate on it. They prolly make a rain cover too.

    Thanks guys
I was just a bit concerned if have to go back to a stock setup what filters i could get and dont want to have to do a retune on it.

I will look at the aftermarket filters for the stock set up and have a look at the arlen ness

I use a Kury Hypercharger on my EVO Fatty. I have ridden in extreme monsoon downpours and it hasnt missed a beat.

I've run a ventilator with sock in some serious rain, hail and even snow.

Bikes never skipped a beat. I think because it's in closer to the tank and shielded.

I've never owned an EFI bike yet, so no experience, but useing a Bobby Wood air cleaner, ( Big ugly open to weather K&N, that flows good ) i used tat on a Woods Rebel 43.5 carb was riding to willowbank from sydney to race once, & was pissing down rain no water sock as don't think they make one for that, bike ran ok but would restricy air flow till it dried out, bit of water mist cleans the carbon out.

personaly , i've never thought having a 90 degree bend would help air flow.

Lack of knowledge about the air filters as I run a stock one, but on a previous Harley I had a similar problem in very heavy rain. After much searching, I located a nicked wire that shorted out intermittently, usually in very heavy rain.

Just a thought from left field.

Run the std rainsock on a ventilator, just does not like large throttle applications in the driving rain! Never had it stop though

Ive got a big sucker stage one on my sporty and I bought an old school round cover that covers the filter but without any backing plate might suck some water in. Haven't been in anything like your pic ...........yet

take the sock and throw it in the bin. I have a heavy breather and had heaps of trouble with it in heavy rain. One night I forgot to take it and got caught in heavy rain. Had no problem. I have done is since. Get the odd sputter but much much better. Just make sure to clean it after.
