New engine oil consumption

Is it normal for a brand new engine to use a fair bit of oil during run in? Assuming it was full on purchase. I've just hit 1600km and due for service. Checked oil after a ride this arvo and I'm just shy of an inch off the bottom of the dipstick. I definitely haven't babied her. Haven't given it heaps, but kept it above 2500rpm almost always, and mainly sat at 3000+ with a few good squirts up to about 4000+.

I was always told not to worry too much when the bike is being broken in. Some bikes use a lot, some not so much. All the metal bits are finding a "home" and when they're all tight and comfy it should all level out.
However, If in doubt always ring the dealer. It's best to get them to acknowledge your concern in case it turns out to be a problem later on.

Cheers. I'll post up what the dealers response is. Hopefully it's nothing serious, I'll wait and see what they come back with before jumping to any conclusions.

I rang the dealer today. Predictably, the service managers response was a fairly nonchalant "yeah that's actually pretty normal mate".
Righto, whatever. I'll challenge that in person on Saturday when I take it in for service.

I'm fairly certain that if you told a Harley Dealer that half of Australia just sank into the ocean, they'd reply with "that's pretty normal mate..."

And the update: I topped up the oil this morning before riding to Brisbane cos I didn't want to risk it, I showed the service guy where the level was at, and he conceded that it sounded abnormal. No signs of leakage/sumping, they've noted my concern on the service history, noted the current odo reading and fill level, and told me to bring it back in 1000km so they can note where the level is at. If it needs major topping up before that, then yeah we have an issue and can proceed further. I'm happy with that result. Cheers again for all the replies fellas.
