Softy brake upgrade

I've done a search but can't find the answers I need so hoping someone can help.

I am wanting to do a front brake upgrade on my 2008 softy, I have looked at the brembo brakes (custom style) but don't want brand names all over the bike and the custom style has brembo engraved in em.So what I am wanting to do is put a caliper off a bagger on, correct me if in wrong fellas but I believe they ARE brembo and are 4 piston ? If so along with braided lines will make a significant improvement.

I'm also relatively certain that the mounting bolt holes are the same but what I'm hoping is the rotor to the forks distance is the same therefor the caliper lines up with rotor?

The v rods also run the same caliper but I'm unsure about the mounting holes being same distance apart?

Not after any big ideas on twin disc or anything just want to improve a tad on the stock setup with an easy solution.

Chriso can ya get a bigger Floating rotor and spacers required to move caliper to suit like ya can on dirt bikes

Can't tell you much about your Softy, but the later Touring Brembo's and discs were a bolt on with my 2000 FXD.
I'm pretty sure your bike uses the same size 11.5" (?) rotor as the FXD, so it should be simple bolt on with the Brembo caliper and 11.8" disc.

Hey Chriso ... I have a 08 FXSTC and went down the PM calliper path ... might not suit you due to them having their logo on them but a far better braking system than stock .

What I ended up doing was going with a 6 piston PM calliper suited to a RC components 13" rotor ... the bigger rotor of course gives more braking surface which means better braking , well I think so anyhow , maybe some brake guru`s can say if that is true or not .

Again the Guru`s can jump in here but doesn't the 08 Softy already have Braided lines , mine does ... I know they are not the shiny ones like the after market ones but they are still braided as far as I am aware .

This was all a straight bolt on job , no spacers or any dramas what so ever ... the only thing I would change if I had my time over would be to go a Full Floating disk , the RC components rotor I went with is a 2 pc semi Floater which like I say is so much better than stock but a Full Floater would be better again .

Full Floater`s in most cases eliminate the chance of rotor warping and also lessen the sometimes possibilities of squeaking rotors and as I found out just today with my other bike , a 99 Springer Bobber / Chopper project , you can get Full Floater rotors from any Harley Dealer , and depending which one you went for they tend to be a shit load cheaper than some of the fancy brands .

One other path you might like to investigate is getting just about any of the top Jap bike callipers and get someone to make up a bracket to match up to your rotor / fork leg combination because all the ones I have had experience with are so far superior to anything Harley Have Ever put on their bikes .

I`m not bagging Harley`s on purpose , I have 2 and I love them , but the fact is The Jap bike callipers are so much better ... considering how much we pay for Harleys and Harley related stuff you would have thought that they would have had decent brakes on their bikes long before now .

Anyhow hope that has given you some ideas to play with , let us know which path you go down .

gday chriso,i have put the harley brembo on my 2002 heritage,i got a pair of polished discs off ebay(only used 1 of them) from a tourer and a new caliper from local harley shop, had to change one of the caliper mount bolts as they are both the same now instead of one long and one short bolt, had to file out the brake line fitting where the banjo bolt goes through on the caliper end very very slightly i think thats beacause the brembos are a metric size banjo bolt not imperial,i am using the original master cylinder and the original braided line, there is virtualy no freeplay in the lever using the original master cylinder which feels diferent at first but the brake does not drag and has a very progresive feel, awsome power i would do it again.

i am under the impresion you need to change the rotor out as they are slighty diferent size, someone else may be able to confirm that?i didnt need to shim or pack anything out on mine it all lined up well.i purchased a new caliper rather than second hand as they come with the banjo bolt(which is also the bleeder bolt on these)and new pads included.

    hope that helps mate.

I fitted PM 6 piston on the font with braided line and duel caliper master cylinder, PM 4 piston on the rear and Brembo's Full Floating rotors and it's a great deal better then std on my Fat Boy. But it's no jap bike for braking power, but then its rocket ship v battle cruiser
