Has anyone had trouble with their starters on 09 and later models as we just got back from a ride up north QLD and mates 2010 ultra with 60000 thousand ks starter died. It still spins but won't engage the gear. We just bought a new one from the dealer in Townsville. Mine has been giving trouble cranking, it sometimes starts first up and other times it will wind and sounds like the starter gear is throwing in and out. After finding out how hard it is to push start an Ultra I don't want any more practise.

Is there a genuine or after market upgrade?

    Thanks

Did the dealer , when you replaced your mates starter tell you if the starter was fried , and or, the starter clutch had failed ??.. Did they recommend to your mate,, if it was original battery , (2010 and 60,000 km) it may be time to replace ??
Your bike shows symptoms of the starter clutch starting to go !! How old is your battery ???

All the above components are prone to wear and tear .. To get the longest life out of the starter and its components its imperative to have a strong well maintained battery ,, good positive cables and connections ,,and good earthing ,, so as the starter is getting the full amount of power to start our big engines and not putting any undue stress on components that are at risk of premature breakdown. With regard earthing,, the starter on 2009 up, (I think), are earthed by 2 bolts only,, get in a habit of checking these at service time..
If I were you , I'd start with a new battery , (if due), check positive and ground cables, check starter earth, ( ie 2 bolts) and see how you go !!!
Hopefully , your starter clutch is showing the first symptoms of a weak battery and no permenant damage has been done ... Good luck ....

Both have batteries less than 6 months old, that was the first thing I tried. The one we replaced we just picked up and changed ourself as we didn't want to wait all day so it could cool down to do it, just changed it ourself the next morning.

I'm pretty sure his was the clutch as we pulled it apart as much as we could with the tools we had and did not find anything wrong. The only thing we couln't get to was the clutch but will get that apart today now that we are home.

Will let you know what we find.

    Thanks
