You're 100% correct there Hilly. I have ridden a few other bikes with upgrades and really liked it, no surprise there. But thought for what I want, the kit I am putting in would be fine. On a side note, it just arrived on the door step. Lucky I have the day off. 1 week postage from the states. Now to put all the pieces of this puzzle together.
I had 55's in a 01 dyna 95 inch they worked great easy on valve train too, I had them with 9.5 comp then 10.1, then 11.1, loved it with 11.1 but used decomp valves & went through a lot of starter motor rebuilds. But it flew & still does, just new owner going to S&S 625 I gave him those cams too but I preferred the 55 myself I did quicker times with 55 at the drags too , but 625 showed more HP. The black dyno showed it was quicker in quarter mile with less HP ( made the HP quicker with 55 )
Hilly I use the gear box always have But when I had four speed big twins was. Not much point shifting to 3rd as was close to top.
Hey I've never shifted back to 5th ha ha got a 5 speed and glad I have saw a broken 6 speed not as tough as 5 speed from look of it
Hey Hilly if it's working for you that's great.just if I was building a ground up & big tq hp I would have to choose the 5 speed as stronger, same as in old day's if you built ground up & you had a choice 4 or five speed you took the 5 speed as heaps stronger than the 4 speed the shovel I had & road for 20 years ( & still going ) I had to rebuild the gear box all the time Andrews gears were crap the stock HD gears proved to be best but still had to rebuild if you made bulk hp & used it. Now the shovel has a 6 speed riviera I've never seen in that but owner happy. He just got back from USA a 6,000 ride on a new 6 speed 103 said was slow he could only get it up to 180kS flat out the old shovel is a 98 " still can do quarter in 11's & do long trips. The new one's seem to get heavier as they get bigger motors but he said the sport glide he hired handled great . I like cam's with a lot of low end grunt too but don't matter what Harley motor or what size it is i won't give it a roll on below 3,000 no matter as have looked at too many stuffed bottom ends, they use rollers not car type cranks, the rollers can not take heavy loads or hammering they breAk up, you do more damage rolling on from 2,000 rev than sitting on 5,000 all day.
Top fuel Nitro Harley's can't run those roller bearings as they would just break up in one pass down quarter mile. Keep rev's 2,500 n up. If it's high comp 3,000 n up.
