I have an 08 flht, the buffeting over 80km/h was terrible when I first got it. I fitted the air dam that lives under the bottom triple clamp, big improvement. I then fitted the air deflectors that sit on the sides of the fork legs, huge improvement. 50,000 kms later I still won't take 'em off !!!! I had them powder coated black to help them blend in and disappear, it worked. I just did a 12 hr ride from Sydney to mil dura and rode with the visor on my full face open the entire way, not even a rattle from it. It's that effective that I've had to buy a 4" screen for summer as I just melt with the standard height screen on. Can't recommend the fork leg and triple tree combination enough. Also, this doesn't change with any brand of helmet. Hope this helps someone.
Wife and I are up for new helmets so will go look at the Shoei GT-Air, thanks for the tip. I must say I'm not having any dramas yet with my 2014 Road King classic but then I haven't done more than several 1 hour trips yet either.
On the 99 Glide Standard I was buffetted badly with the standard screen. Replaced it with a taller one which reduced the buffetting but no good in foggy conditions, also too hot wih no air flow. Last choice was a very short screen which allowed full wind on the face with no buffetting but still the protection of the batwing fairing. It was was fitted with air deflectors. I was using an open face Shoei and then a Shark Evoline series 2.
Recently replaced the FLHT with an 08 FLHX which has fork air deflectors and lower fairings which are both adjustable for airflow. The screen was a very dark tinted 8 inch Clock Works air splitter which is curved at the top. Absolutely brilliant on the ride from Adelaide to Melbourne using the Shark Evo in open and full face modes.
For the time being I've slipped the clear standard height screen back on and I've noticed the return of he buffetting on the top of the helmet. I'm now checking out the best price for a another wind splitter with only light tinting. The two screens are the same height but it is the new design that makes the difference.
As for helmets, the Evo 2 is the best and most versatile that I've used. It is comfortable, not too heavy and the chin piece when at the back of the helmet is not noticeable. Highly recommended. I noticed that a series 3 is now out.
