    Evening all,

I've just got a white Bell custom 500 and am going to try and remove all of the inners to try and make it not look like a mushroom.

Has anyone done this?  I've read threads that mention hot spoons, thinners, sandpaper etc but I'm hoping to get the entire foam piece out before starting work on it.  At least that should stop the liner from getting all messed up.

Any tips?  I'm ideally trying to the white plastic outside, completely taken apart from the foam.

    Thanks.

So no legitimate information then? I only asked for info, not opinions.

Just to clarify - my OP might not have been exactly accurate, I'm wanting to take the inners out so that I have better access to it to scrape out little bits here and there to lower it and for comfort.
Not intending to ride around with just the plastic shell on my nogging.

I had a couple of tight spots with mine. So, just took to those areas with a ball pene hammer to try and squash the polystyrene a bit. Worked so well, I ended up pounded most of the internals, and the lid sits lower and is much more comfy.

Dissolving it is kind of the point. If I could take 10mm out of the top internals then it would fit a low lower and be more comfortable around the ears...
I think thinners seems a little mental. I was expecting answers like using a lino cutter or something like that...

I've got the internals out now and left the foam attached so should have the minimal effect on safety as it's not been detached from the outer shell.

not that I`m condoning something that protects your noggin but try a Heat gun. I have seen this done successfully .Apply heat carefully ( it melts quickly) DON`T BREATH IN SMOKE !!!!! Poison) then with a cricket ball or similar round hard object pat liner down, affectively you are squashing it down...take it slow

Can I just ask then, what do you all do to your lids to not have them look so bloody ridiculous?

I see guys blitzing round with open face lids on all the time that look great... You can be damn sure they didnt buy them in store like that...?

You could try a stanley knife, set it about 5mm depth, cut parallel lines about 5 mm apart, then go 90 degrees and do it like into squares, then scrape out the cubes, sand it smooth.
repeat till you get the depth desired, if it is a bit deep fill it back in with normal foam.

I think, if you can buy a Harley, go buy a helmet that fits and feels right. who cares about the cost

With those cool lookin low sitting helmets, they are novelty helmets that offer no safety. If you want one, google bushranger or cannonball helmets. They retail around 150-180.

But don't stuff around with the foam in a proper helmet. You're weakening its safety capability significantly and it still won't look as flash as one of the above novelty helmets.

Will67, are the NEX lids really that much better? Happy to buy another lid if it means not customising and compromising the safety...

If you get a table spoon, bend the handle a little and then get the spoon part really hot you can use this to mould the foam...Worked 30 years ago anyway...

the ball peen hammer is the go Picker. gently tap the top of your head with it until the lid fits just right. the only disadvantage with this method is you will shrink a little but at least you will look cool when your riding your bike. hope this helps.

No idea Big Steve, I bought it about 2 weeks ago but it could be older stock.
I've chucked the box but will check the label when I get home from work.

l would have to agree with others maybe modify the foam with a ball pene hammer otherwise leave it alone wear it and over a fair bit of time it will sit better on your scone. Other option buy one of the novelty helmets and gently try and remove your Australian Standards sticker from the legit helmet and attach it to the so called cool one. Sorry but l am not sure if you value your head

The end of a baseball bat can contour the foam slightly for a better fit .
