Hi all, I just watched on Youtube a twin cam replacement and pushrod adjustment in real time and it took an hour. Really straight forward too, just need torque settings for the bolts. Why did my dealer quote me 650 dollars for this procedure? Same dealer quoted me 125 dollars to change brake pads, I did it front and rear in about 18 minutes.

Why do we get ripped off for everything in this country? I was in Europe last year and I was amazed what the rest of the world pay for shit. How about a bourbon free poured to like half the glass for 3 euro, about 4 bucks. We on average pay about 2 to 4 times the price of anything. Umm....now back to the workshop question. Its a mates bike, and it looks really straight forward the cam replacement, Ive worked on old Holden and Morris motors, so I sorta know how to hold a spanner. Oh and can it be done with the pipes still on the bike? as in will the cam cover clear the V&H pipes, the brake leaver looks in the way a bit too..

No its not Honest.... cross my heart and hope my Harley dies, my mate Rastus was so impressed with mine he wants his lumpy cam changed but can't afford it. Well not at the crazy price quoted.

was that a dealer quote or pro cycle quote? did the $650 include the bearings? adjustable push rods, new filter and oil etc or just the labour?

As for exhaust clearance to the cam cover I use "long shanked ball ended allen key sockets" and have no dramas at all.
Hilly, could you take a picture and post up what this little critter looks like !!!! Cheers .

these guys I think Hilly means. So you can still get a torque wrench on the bolts for the cam support plate no problem?

    Hi,

90-120in-lbs for those screws, i reckon 1 or 2 set to approximate would be fine

    Thanks

the reason I asked is, to remove the Cam Cover, and inspect the cam tensioners , (nothing else), I thought you had to remove, 1. the right floor board , 2. the header pipes, to gain access to all the Cam Cover screws, . . The way I read Hillys post , you could leave the header pipes alone , and get access to all the screws of the Cam Cover and remove it , with some type of allen key.
Paul, I have a set of allen keys that are in your picture, and I cant get access to the bottom screws. Have I misread things here, and the header pipe has to come off !!! I just thought if there was a way of removing the Cam cover , (to inspect the cam tensioners ) , without removing the exhaust system , it would be a lot less work. I'm always willing to learn new tricks !!!! Cheers Lads !

    Hi,

What about cutting down the allen key, or also what about buying a small hex bit which you then put a spanner onto, think the torque for those cam cover screws is about 130ins-lbs so could do up easy enough

    Thanks

Do exhaust leaks happen or is that a thing of the past?

Also adjustable push rods, do they wind up far enough to clear the tapped cover for removal or does the tappet cover have to come off?
