Thanks all for advice. I have no intention of doing this stuff myself but just wanted some information. Dyno Harley I wish you weren't so far away!

Doesn't matter if you stuff it up, we learn by mistakes, well try to. There are plenty of second hand almost new ones around, the dealers don't even want them, they send them home with the bike if the owner puts a new kit in.

Personally I'd  bore it out and fit good forged aftermarket pistons and rings, not Harley ones.

Hi guys ... hey Fat Bat just a small hijack of your post but it sort of has a connection ... guys how far can a 80 cube EVO jug be bored out to ... and the same question for the 96 cube TC jug .

I have recently just had on my 08 Softail a set of 106 cube S & S barrels and pistons and a set of S & S 79 cc heads installed with a set of cams and other little goodies ... and have the original Barrels pistons and heads which only have 15,000 K`s on them ... the original thinking was by the time I got the bores done and purchased aftermarket pistons and rings and what ever the cost was pretty close as to buying the S & S gear and now if for whatever reason I could always put back on the original gear if I did damage to the S & S gear or whatever other reason ... which of course will probably never happen and they will just sit on the shelf for ever and a day , Lol .

The other reason for the question is I also have a 99 Springer Softail that will be getting a bit of a hop up down the line and the main consensus last time I inquired was just do a cam and nothing else when it came to the EVO `S , which seems a tad strange ... I admit to coming from a Jap bike back ground with a my main time in Jap bikes being on old Z9`s and Z 1000`s .

The Z 1000 for example we had the option of going to a 1015 ... 1045 ... 1070 ... or all the way to 1103 ... all from a standard bore depending on Brands and what not ... used to use MTC ... Wiesco ... or JE .

So was just curious as to what levels of bores could one go on the above mentioned jugs .

Appreciate any feed back ... Tim

Thanks Dynoharley for the feed back , really appreciate it ... could I pester you just a bit more ... for the curious rookie in me does + .030 over size in the EVO`s equate to 88 cu or another size and are there in between sizes .

I suppose what I am thinking about is down the line for example I know I can get S & S super stock heads in either Low or High compression but one has to use a different piston as opposed to stock ... of course I can also get Performance replacement heads in the same configuration and stick with standard pistons but if I were to go the Super Stock versions my curious brain was thinking I could go one size and then further down the line go up another size ... simular to the Kawasaki example I was talking about ...

Also along the same lines with the 08 Softail I have just gone to 106 cu S & S barrels and pistons is there any room for upsizing those barrels down the line ...

Obviously I will run these inquiries past my builder as well but one of the reasons I joined this forum was to bounce ideas off smarter guys than me and not to give you to big a head on this wet Sunday up here in Newman Land , Lol ... you and others on here seem to fall into that category quite well .

Enough of me for now , looking forward to hearing yours and others thoughts , cheers ... Tim .

Once cylinders are honed using torque plates and made perfectly round, is there any chance of them going out of round if not installed into a running motor? Strange question I know but read a few things in overseas forums suggesting this was a possibility.

They will sag if you leave them long enough..............

Sorry for taking the piss man, someones been drinking or smoking something they found abandoned in a park in a brown paper bag to write something like that. Guess a piston flying up and down in there and a massive explosion every second rotation will stuff them up too. lol. The only thing that is likely to happen is a bit of surface rust if you leave them for a while. Some builders prefer to bore used cylinders but would doubt if there is much difference. A Toyota that will do over 300,000 km without rebuilding is done on a new block. Take some of the previous good advice here and follow it, buy a workshop manual. Bound to be a how to on youtube somewhere, there is for nearly everything else. If it doesn't work properly its not a big deal, there are heaps of very cheap, nearly new, used ones around to have another go with, or rebore yours, its not rocket science.

    Just do it.
