cam question

This might be a silly question but I have a stage 4 in my 103 street bob, its dynoed at about 118wrhp and thats cool but I miss the refinment of the stock set up. I assume its lumpy idle and raw manners are due to the cam (SE259E going by the brochure) in the kit, is that correct?  If so is there a cam that I could replace it with to get back some of that smoothness? I realise I'd have to sacrifice HP but thats cool, or is only the SE cam going to work with the stage 4 set up?

    Thanks :o)

A change to a wood TW-555 (stronger bottom end) or TW-777 (more mid-upper) would transform your stage 4.
I'm sure there are other cams, but I do like wood's cams.

hi paul , you have very good hp  figures for the 259e cam , your intake and exhaust must be all very happy together , you need the company who fitted the kit to give you all of the items listed , cams , pistons , head gaskets, etc, info before makeing decision of another  cam  paul ,

and what the static compression is set at now.

Paulybronco is right it is not quite that simple, you could not ask for a better result the 118 hp, you have a higher compression with that kit, better airflow and a motor that is designed to unleash, the f#cking thing wants to go! Check the mounts on the motor, I rode a mates Street Bob the other day over to a dealer for a service, he had a 103 kit put in a little while ago, it nearly shook the shit out of me and he has different cams, the mechanic rode it and an update of the mounts improved the ride some what, so check them out as well.

The guys above are correct in mentioning to check current build, but the specs for the current factory SE 103 pro kit are readily available.
The current kit spec'ed with the SE259 use CNC ported stock heads, and 10.5:1 pistons.
Even allowing for +/- a few points of compression due to variances in piston height and head volume, both the Cams mentioned will
work well in the 10.2 - 10.8 range.
The TW-777 has been used in a lot of SE 103 STG 4 builds in the US where people weren't happy with the SE-259.

I hope you can get the bike running more to your liking but isn't the compression, heads and throttle body in that stage 4 kit set up as a package with those cams to be a high hp motor which often lack manners and torque down low.

My local shop suggested the se stage 4 kit but your reasons are why I wasn't interested.

Thanks, the bike is 6 weeks old with only 4000ks on it so its practically new, so the engine mounts should be Aokay. Its the standard pro stage 4 I'm pretty sure, M&W here in Brisbane installed it. I guess that's so true about it all working together. Where can I get these TW-777 cams? can they just go straight in? of course the bike would have to be dyno tuned again, but are these cams just plug and play with this kit? If the TW-555 or TW-777 smooth it out great, more bottom end bonus, can never have enough low end grunt.

    These guys are good:

Did you get a print out of your dyno sheet ?

Don't jump in to anything before doing some more research.

I wouldn't like to say plug/play, you'd probably need adjustable pushrods. But still a simple install for anyone with the knowledge.

Have a look at some of the info available on the web in the USA. There's millions of people over there who have done everything to a Harley and then some. There'd be people who have experienced this and already worked out the best means of getting the bike to perform the way you want it to.

Yes I have the print out I'll post it shortly, actually I do have adjustable push-rods, had the SE perfect fit rods replaced, bit too noisy.

I'll be keen to see dynoharley's advice after you post up your list of items. Wish he was much closer to me for my upcoming build.

Can the dealer do a compression reading? the parts should be the standard pro stage IV kit, but I'll double check that.

    Hi,
You could try the SE211e cam, probably the only one that may smooth things out for you and work with those components

    Thanks

Robots, can you explain how using a Cam with even more duration will help smooth the power delivery down low ?
It will likely bump the torque peak even higher up the rev range.
I think your a bit off the mark with the SE211.

Hilly I think you probably hit on the head, it is what it is. Its constantly hunting down low because that's the build, it wants to rev. I guess that just may not be my riding style. I went back to the tuner today, hes one of if not the best in Queensland, pro dyno and he said it would be a shame and pretty radical to back build it to the way it was Stage 1 so he suggested putting torque cones in the headers. Ive never heard of them, he said its worth a try and its cheap, should smooth out the bottom and give it more down low too. Of course taking it from the top, but that cool. Really how often do you need to nail it from 120kph.

I really have to question your tuner, as I really doubt torque cones will help much at all, but I guess they are cheap.
What exhaust are you using ?
Maybe Dynoharley has done some back to back testing with them ?

    http://www.nrhsperformance.com/tech_arcones.shtml

Why are you mentioning going back to stage 1 ?
By using a different cam with what you have, you may loose some HP up top, but you will gain down low, and smooth things out a little.

I'd still like to see your Dyno sheet.

    hi,

pretty good example of SE on the box there, paulT wants to take it back it to stage1 hehehehehehehe

all without a dremel required as well

    thanks

Hilly, the current Stg4 don't use the big heads anymore:

    From the SE catalogue:

"oversized (1.875";) stainless steel intake valves and stock (1.575";) stainless steel exhaust valves "
