Noticed today a bit of fuel under my sled, tracked it down to a crack in the weld of the front mounting tab

    That sucks. What year ?
Obviously a manufacturing fault, and the pricks should warranty such a dangerous problem.
It should be an easy enough repair, but it will still need repainting, and the cost would add up.

There was a guy here in Perth ( Subiaco I think ) who had NOS tanks for everyfucking thing only a year+or so ago

He was advertising them on Gumtree for ages. Don't know who he was/is but he had a ship-load of stuff

Could be my early onset Alzheimers again , but he had young Softail tanks amongst them at the time

There should also be tanks around from folks who fit those " numbered factory paint sets ", Frasers have had them in the past before now I know

Trouble is with tanks , most times they're being replaced is when they're post accident damage and it's an insurance job anyways

I think for 2008 fatboy / Heritage / Deluxe tanks are all the same bar paint options and tank badges so that may help

Best of luck on finding a "Black" one to bolt straight on

For what it's worth , I have not seen this kind of problem on any Harley before now in near 20 years

I'm with uncle. Nothing funny about it as it looks like a manufacturing weld placement error, but I thought the 120R might have shaken the tank a bit more than a stock mill if that makes sense. Still, HD should be at least looking at the weld placement and be responsible if it is faulty.

to clear things up in my opinion the 120r motor is as smooth as the stock motor if not better, for one the crank run out is way better than any stock crank I have checked.

Up date on the tank, A mob in Perth will do the repair for $770 it will be brand new when I get it back, they do how ever want it for 4 to 5 weeks as they rekon they willweld it and coat the inside of the tank and this takes 4 weeks to cue

So just waying up some other options

    Hi,

Also check the dealers out across aus, as a few of them starting to put a bit of older gear up on their ebay shop sites, geelong harley had a few tanks recently and richardsons normally have a bit of gear
    Thanks

Difficult to see from the photo as to what might have caused the failure. HD prides themselves on the quality of the way tins are pressed, especially in uniform thickness throughout the bend. Visited the York factory back in 2007, but cannot recall the process for the tanks, only fenders.

The increased torque may have something to do with it, but difficult to gauge....

I’m an electronics guy, but I've been involved in enough mine site structural shit to suggest you buy a new tank. If it was a process failure, who’s to say there won't be further issues. Maybe it is a one off... or a bubble that caused failure due to corrosion... who knows. If it were mine it would be new tank and possibly get the old tank assessed by HD in Sydney... my 2c worth without even a grin...

I was in vegas just over 2 years ago on the way back to Perth from Daytona Bikeweek

Las Vegas HD had brand new NOS Dyna wideglide and Heritage deluxe tanks in 4 different colours on the clearance shelf at $200 US a piece

What I mean is it's worth a search for a Softail tank in the US for sure , although you're off the road until then I suppose.

You'd get it well within the 5 week repair time you've been quoted IF they'll post to Australia , as they're " not supposed to "

Oh , and if you find an '08 Anniversary tank in Copper Gold and black I have NOS fenders to match it haha...
