Arriving in Oz this coming Dec. 9th  leaving Jan.22. I want to do a 10 day tour with my 23 year old daughter (passenger) on a bagger which I'll rent starting around Jan.5th. We've been up and down the Pacific Hwy between Sydney and Brisbane a few time over the years (in a car). North of Brisbane in Dec the wet starts I believe. So that means inland. Looking to do around 3000kms give or take. Daughter has never really been on a bike or bike tour before, where I've done many long distance tours in North America. Looking for good scenery, roads, food ,unique pubs or buildings etc. I've been as far north as Cairns and daughter lives on Briebie island. Looking for suggestions for a route to take for a good layed back daddy /daughter tour.  We aren't high rollers  so can rough it in comfort . (Do I say hello to the officer in Tamworth) Thank you all in advance for suggestions!

Where are you landing here in Oz? Picking up bike and where do you have to take it back to?
Its not a bad ride from Sydney to Melbourne via the Princess H/way ( coast road)'Then, The Great Ocean Rd around Victoria between Melbourne & Warnambool / Portland is A great To Do Ride. Maybe over to Mount Gambier ( see the Blue Lake) ( changes diff colour blue at diff times of year). Then Maybe up to Mildura, Then along the Murray River East wards to Albury / Wodonga. Then you can head either North to Sydney OR South to Melbourne.

If it's QLD you want, then just take Wet weather gear. Go up coast as far as you want, then maybe head  back via inland roads

If you haven,t booked accom , stay away from the coast . We found accom easy in Snowy Mtns around that time .

Sorry guys landing and leaving from Brisbane.---- I'll see if I can pick up a copy of the Australian motorcycle atlas on line - good suggestion Cview. I didn't think about having to book for 3 days or ahead. When my wife and I are on tour we never book ahead because we never know where we will be exactly and how long we want to stay there.

Thanks for the offer paulybronco, I really like the Montville -Maleny area. Good views, old stone town and motorcycle ridge running. I don't mind heat, when we went down to the Grand Canyon last August it was 40 to 45 degrees each day, it's that torrential rain that I don't like and it kind of "dampens" the spirit of the ride. I would like to go north and then inland out to towards the centre and back or is this a bad idea at this time of year. I worked out in "the Great Sandy Desert" many years ago outside of Marble Bar  as well as Greenvale in Queensland outside of Charters Towers so I kinda remember what it was like.

Is going out the Moonie and Balonne Highway to Cunnamulia down the Mitchell Highway to #39 and back to the coast on the Oxley and New England Highway a good idea or is this like crossing the Nullabor---- a lot of scrub with nothing in between, or are there some hidden gems out there worth seeing . Is it feasible in 10 days and what's the road condition like?

At this point it looks like it will be rented from "Eagle Riders" Brisbane.

That time of year will be busy as hell with all the school holidays no matter where you go. Maybe some of the inland roads will lead to places less travelled.
Airport to Eagle Riders taxi close to $80 I guess.
Gasoline Alley is just around the corner and also hire bikes, maybe worth a call to compare costs. The owner is also Candian, Grant Price and I belive he still has a dealership in Canada, he may have a understanding of the type of riding that would interest you.

Pauly, Eagle rider are in Moss street don't or didn't have a wide selection of bikes but they could easly get something from another franchise I guess.

If your heading to ThunderBolt way which you may find interesting if you get the local story, try a route starting in Brisbane to Beaudesert - Queen Mary Falls - Killarney - Warwick, ( which is the lang way between Beaudesert and Warick but a nice ride) turn left on to the New England Highway and on to Tenterfield for night1. Although that maybe a big day and stopping in Warick may suit you both better for a first day out. Also worth getting to know the Local story in Tenterfield..
Either bring a GPS and a bar mount or pick up a cheap on here or you WILL miss a turn some where. Just a cheap car style one will do the job but having said that cheap is still $200 for a Garmin.

Oh and keep them lenses packed well the roads arn't that friendly

There's some great roads around this neck of the woods going inland and then back to the coast. Brisbane Tenderfeild to Casino Woodburn then overnight at Yamba . Yamba to Grafton Glen Innes Armidale Coffs Harbour overnight. Coff Harbour Wauchope Bendemere Tamworth Newcastle etc.

I stay off the roads around the holidays times because we do get some ordinary driver's on the local roads. The cops ain't that bad unless your doing something wrong or they can give you a ticket for helmet or noisy pipes. If your on a stock bike and stick close to the speed limit they tend to leave you alone I have been lucky on my modified bike with infringements but I cant say that about my heavy vehicle licence. Dont worry about the cops enjoy your holiday with the daughter.

Any ride is a good ride as they say, just some are better than others. This one was kinda in the middle and 3260 kms long  over seven days --------Not all that hot 32 degrees------ sunny, overcast, rain just the usual monsoon weather.   Went from Airlie Beach to Sydney via Mackay-Yepoon-Mt Morgan-A3 (The Country Way) Waterfall Way (raining)- Thunderbolt Way (socked in raining and road washed out and being repaired (just gotta glimpse of the hills through the clouds and will have to do that one again) Then over to Hill End via Bylong Valley Way. At the top of Hill at Bylong Valley way we had a herd of kangaroos stampede across the road in front of us but I saw them in time. Best part was my daughter was filming the whole ride up the hill and caught it all on video.------------ It' now Saturday morning, 5 degrees and raining and I'm back in Canada for awhile and my bikes are parked in the garage.sad
