Stage 1 Upgrade

    Hi all,

I'm looking at getting a stage 1 upgrade done on my Iron 883 and was wondering if it is possible to install this myself? I know I might have some warrenty issues if I perform the upgrade myself, but the labour is very expensive for what seems like easy work. I've been quoted around the $1800 mark including labour and a SE tuner ($560 bucks worth of labour and additional parts like gaskets apparently). Does this seem expensive? This is with SE pipes which I've yet to decide fully on (anyone recommend some quieter aftermarket pipes that have that nice deep harley growl but aren't loud enough to draw attention from the police? I've seen rush slips on suggested as well).

    Thanks,

Thanks mate. Are SE worth the price or are there better slip ons which have a not too loud noise but a nice growl? Vance and Hines are simply too noisy for me.

Also do you know if warrenty is affected by installing things like an exhaust and air filter? I would assume that a remap would void some warrenty but given that it is Harley's remaps, maybe not?

    Cheers,

    Woz

Thanks mate. I meant more if I do it myself there is always the claim that "warrenty is void" because it wasn't done by a qualified harley mechanic. But that's a risk I guess I choose to take haha.

Thanks for the replies mate, I'll check out the Supertrapp.

    I did v&h slipons (straight shots), K & N air filter and flashed the map with V & H FP3.

The good thing with the FP3 is it uploads your original map which can be put back in a matter of minutes if need be. It also auto tunes as you ride if you want to fine tune your map.

It is the only tuner I have used, all I can say is it did just what I wanted. Google it for more info.

    All up around a grand.

I'm having the same dilemma. Technically you'll void the warranty, and if something goes wrong with the engine and the dealer decides it's been caused directly or indirectly by your work, you can be sure as shite of having an uphill battle on your hands. My two cents, for what it's worth, is that I'm gonna sleep easier knowing my warranty's in check, but no doubt that this peace of mind will come at greater expense. Your call brother.

Yeah Jay I think that might be the way I go. Easier to know for sure. Do you need to get a SE super tuner for just a stage 1 or can the software be downloaded by the dealer? Also does the super tuner need a dyno or is it simply enough to autotune?

Pain in the arse but the 2014 SE pipes for my Iron now require an additional "end cap" which adds $150 bucks on it. Thinking some other pipes might be a better choice.

Also, looking at getting a Mustang Seat, anyone recommend a good 2 up one? Looking at the fastback.

Edit: Disregard the thing about the tuner. From what I've read it is worth it, so will get it.

You'll definitely want a tuner, although it doesn't strictly need to be the SE tuner, there's plenty of blokes on here who know way more than me about these things, check out the tuner & EFI threads. From what I've learned, the SE is fine for stage 1 mods, but you may want something like a TTS or Powervision if you plan on doing anything more to the engine. As for Dyno'ing, again, read other threads about it. Some swear by it, others don't. Hope this helps.
