LEAKING FRONT BRAKE RESERVOIR

Doing a check over of my bike today and noticed that the front brake reservoir is leaking around the top lid seal. This is the 3rd Dyna that I know of with this problem and they are all 2yrs old or less. 2012 Wide Glide and two 2013 Fat Bob. Has anybody else had this problem? Thinking of changing the whole reservoir or at least the lid because I'm worried if I just change the seal it might start leaking again. Or has anybody used some type of sealant to help it seal better?. Brake fluid and paint not a good mix!

Had the same problem with my 2006 Heritage and my 2010 Roadking. Loosened screws and then tightened them up again and problem solved both times. Only a slight weep but enough to start the paint peeling around the seal.

No need for sealant, probably not such a good idea either. 2 years, has the fluid been flushed recently? Or topped up?

Most common mistake is taking the lid off, placing it upside down and having the fluid that remains on the seal leak down and into the top section of the lid, then when you put it back on, a small amount of fluid seeps out.

Put a thick sheet down over your tank and fender. Take the lid off, give it a good clean up and dry off the seal, I use a good quality paper towel that doesn't leave any paper behind, replace the lid and make sure you don't over tighten the screws. They only need to be nipped up, otherwise you compress the seal between the lid and resevoir too much, which allows fluid to escape. Make sure you give it a good clean up with water to disperse the residual fluid. Make sure you pump the brakes up before going for a ride.

Remove the top, remove the rubber seal, wipe it clean with a clean rag or paper towel, place the seal back CAREFULLY and you can see and feel it seat. Then place the lid back on and again you will feel it seat, put both screws in and gently snug the scews down. It should now not leak. Please make sure that you put something on your tank to stop any drips from attacking the paintwork.

Out of 18 bikes I've had, the last 4 were Harley. 2 of them, the Heritage and the Fatty both leaked and Harley replaced the seal both times. The Muscle didn't leak and Ultra hasn't started yet. Fingers crossed.
Basically If it doesn't leak, it's not a Harley. I can live with that.
