Stock 08 Dyna FB with 60,000km in VG condition , rego , books.
I recently went to trade in on a used electra glide advertised at 25k , dealer offered me $12k ... i said no deal and will consider selling privately . Does 12k sound fair or unreasonable ? I wanted 17.5k trade but maybe i'm being too optomistic. What do you guys think it's worth.

$12k is , unfortunately , both unreasonable and current market trade price . You may be able to sell privately for more . $17.5 is high end price , with so many low mileage imports that have flooded the market .
The Australian secondhand Harley market used to be a weird one, immune to all the usual market forces, with bikes that cost $30k new selling for $25k 5 years/50,000kms later and for $20k 10 years/100,000kms later! If you take any other mass-produced consumer item, they all depreciate heavily - Falcon, Commodore, Toyota, Jap bikes etc - the more costly an item, the more it depreciates (S class Mercs will drop from $250k to $125k in 3 years). Now, Harleys also depreciate more realistically, but they still hold their value much better than the Japanese bikes. DIRECT imports (since all Harleys in Oz are imports) are the heroes or the villains depending on your point of view. I, for one, can't wait to see the direct import restrictions on cars being lifted (post the sad demise of our car manufacturing, there is no need to protect anyone, least of all the multinational car company importers who brazenly mark up cars here at 2 to 3 x their US / UK prices).
HD Australia, and the dealers, have been way to greedy for way to long. as a horrid example, those trikes sold recently across Australia retailed at $56,000 or $57,000 depending on which state. the same trike in the USA retailed at $32,000 and at that time the two dollars were close enough that exchange rate doesnt need to be factored in. Shipping, taxes and ADR would add approximately $7000. so with the same mark up as US dealers the price should be $39,000. BUT with those retail prices, thats $17,000 profit over and above the US sales profit on one bike. So next time your dealer has a party and you feel good about getting a free sausage, just remember you may have payed for the sausage, and the BBQ and a couple of sportys too.
Keep the bike and purchase another, nothing like have many bikes to ride :-)
Whilst I am a supporter of a pro rata style protectionist policy, I will say this.
Whilst those who have invested in bike shops, training, ect. Many are now subject to non-protectionist market forces.
They cannot really complain.
Why, Most people supported service stations when they stopped being service stations with the attatched mechanics shop that actualy gave auto service. like actualy checking the oil at the pump and topping up engines particularly for woman and those less merchanicaly minded. The service stations got rid of the driveway service and mechanics shop and turned themselves into conveinience stores. Did anyone really care about the family owned local corner store and support them any longer, Absolutly not.
Do bike shop owners seek out an Aussie owned servo to buy fuel or do they ever buy, say BP, a non-aussie owned servo whos also operating as a convenience store, You get the picture.
Do all the Dealers owners buy only Australian made produce in the supermarkets where possible, or support there local corner store or only support Australian owned stores, I think not. In fact, overseas companies are entering the Australian market at an increasing rate, such as Cosco, so do those bike shop owners only shop in Australian owned supermarkets, shops ect, Absolutely not.
How many dealers buy at least an Australian assembled car, for there buisness. Yes some may, but not many.
This analagy is simplistic but true for most buisness owners on any product.
But if your quiet happy to buy cheaper oranges that were grown in the US and not buy the Aussie oranges cause there 50 cents a kilo dearer, You cant realy complain.
So a young lass who lost her job in the corner store because people supported foreign owned servos that provide zero service is an example of why no buisness owner can complain about free trade / free enterprise.
So the goose and the ganders wheel turns..
top effort mick. good answer
