Mate I got the SE 103 stage 2 bolt on kit, 255 cams, no head work,VH big radius, SE Pro Tuner and a custom Dyno tune from Maztech (97 HP), it gets going no

worries and I am 120 kg, so this set up is also a cheap and reliable option, with your skinny arse it would really get going.

See Mickle... That's the info I am looking for.

I am not complaining how the bike rides now - I just love spinning spanners, and so it's a natural progression. :)

    Hi,

There you go Mongrel, 4-5 different opinions on how to build the engine up^^^^

Rock into the HD dealer laydown the $ for the stage 4 kit, bolt it on at home, do the TTS runs and you on the road easy as, have a look in the stage4 thread in the dyna section for results many people have achieved

    Thanks

I'm guilty of planting the seed with Mongrel as I want to do the same on my 2007 96ci fatboy that already has stage 1 mods inc a TTS tuner. I'm starting to put some pieces together over time for a build that may occur before summer but most likely will occur next winter. I don't want to go too overboard with cost or anything that will massively impact on reliability or fuel economy as I ride the bike everywhere in Summer and take it on trips too. Unlike Mongrel, I don't have the confidence to do this myself and will be happy to have an experienced builder assemble the bike once I have all my parts and ideas together. I don't care much for dyno comparisons other than seeing that a bike runs smoothly - how it rides is more important. This is what I have in mind in terms of ideas and questions:

    Cylinders:
I just bought a second hand pair of 103 cylinders with matching heads. I wanted the 103 heads as they have the auto decompression system built in so I can open up my options with cams, compression and start the bike without concern. The cylinders that came with them are a bonus and I considered having the cylinders bored out to 106/107 and then getting pistons, rings, gaskets to suit etc. I could also just throw some 103 pistons in as it is too. However there were a couple of things that swayed me away from using the 103 cylinders and towards the S&S 106 kit. For around $850 delivered from the USA you get the S&S cylinders, pistons, rings, gaskets and everything you need. Their cylinder walls are thicker, stronger and will not have the same heat issues than what may occur with boring out the 103 cylinders. I reckon the S&S kit makes better sense and is pretty good value for money with all things considered.

    Heads:
Eventually I'll send my 103 heads off for a tidy-up. I've contacted a couple of machinists and it seems most offer 'packages' to tidy-up ports and alike to suit a street bike build at around the price of $700-900. I want a bike that is torquey down low with a good throttle response in the midrange. I don't care too much for the top end as I never see the redline and much of my riding is cruising. Before getting the headwork done, I'll need to work out what head gasket, compression and camshafts I'll be running as this will impact the headwork. I'd appreciate advice on head gasket and compression as I'm not across this to any great extent. It seems that many builds of what I'm after have a CR of around 10 to 1.

    Cams:
To keep costs down and avoid any crank issues, I'm going to use chain driven camshafts. Researching the american forums and speaking to a couple of builders, the Andrews 57, SE254e and S&S 583 keep popping up although my CR may need to drop a little. Woods camshafts seem to get a good wrap in the USA but they're more expensive and reportedly very noisey. Would appreciate advice on cams. I know Daggs has the S&S 106 kit but runs the 585 cams that are intended for higher revs and the CR around/above 10. Is this also a reasonable option given I should get plenty of torque and midrange from my build given the extra displacement, headwork etc?

    Throttlebody:
I'm in two minds about spending more money on a throttle body. The recommendation I hear everywhere is to use the SE throttle bodies (50mm for my application)that have injectors and everything you need in a kit. But I'd need to change my air cleaner (more money) and not sure whether tidying up a stock throttle body to match my build mightn't be sufficent however I'd need to assess whether my stock fuel injectors would require replacement.

    Other bits and pieces:
I'd like to get advice on pushrods, lifters, clutch springs, cam bearings etc as whilst I want to keep the costs down and value for money high, I don't want to skimp on important parts that could be easily changed/added whilst the bike is apart, that if skimped on might let the whole build down and cost more in the long run.

Thanks for reading and I hope the more knowledgable and positive people here (you know who you are) can provide considered advice.

LOL! I hear ya Hilly!! This thread is full of that! :)

I am probably just going to do the first stage of my build - SnS 106 Kit, and see how I go.

I guess the only thing I need to check is if compression will be an issue with these on my 57s? Any advice on that would be good.

    Cheers

My local builder only recommends screamin eagle everything. Other reputable builders are a fair distance away. I don't care about conflicting advice; lay it on me please...I know you and others have seen and know what works

    guys

check out this online calculator, you can enter some parameters (cams, gaskets etc etc) and check your compression etc etc

    http://www.bigboyzheadporting.com/TwinCamComp.htm

play with some options and discuss with the "experts"

    Good luck

    Thanks Hilly,

That's really good info. I will keep you posted.

I did notice the SnS info states "2007-2014 Big Twins require 900-0605 head gaskets" So it looks like I need to make sure I get this separatley.

I am going to swap out my Inner Cam Bearings while I am in there this time. Didn't do it last time, as there were no ks on the bike. This time though, I will jam in a new set. Just need to organise the tool.

Upgrading the clutch spring and oil bypass spring may also be in order.

Daggs, if you read this what advice have you got?

Re cams, it seems you initially looked at 583s but decided on 585s. With your 585s, is your ride smooth down low in the revs and are you happy with the throttle response from idle?

Actually I never looked much at the 583's. the 585's on paper along with the bump up to 106 looked to be exactly what I was after.
Turns out I was right, I love the combo. Heaps of torque right through the range and unreal in the midrange to high rpms.
Doesn't hesitate at all off the line, all round nice to ride.
Some sort of clutch upgrade would more than likely be needed, mine slipped after I did the work so I fitted the screaming chicken HD spring. Also fitted the Baisley spring while I was in there

Thanks daggs. That's good to know. I take it the baisley spring assists with oil pressure without having to upgrade the oil pump
