Hi all,
I'm a "Newbie" to the world of Harley Davidson.....having finally purchased a Softail after years of "Dreamin"
However, the bike i've bought (knowingly) has been classed as a "Statutory Write Off", due to damage to the frame.
My intention is to buy a new frame, and re-build the bike as standard, and have found someone who can supply a frame, ADR approved.
My question is: After swapping everything over from the old frame, is it just a simple matter of getting it inspected, in order to register the bike for road use ? Or is there any other problem i might face?
Your help would be appreciated - Please reply to: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Blacklable, The whole concept of a forum is to discuss things on the forum, not through email. So I've removed your email address.
It's also a privacy issue as anyone who responds through email exposes their email address.
Thanks, KC.
Welcome to the forum Blacklable.... one question that may be pertinent... what state do you live in (as opposed to drunken state looking at your forum name)
Hi Blacklable
Sounds like a good project, but you may have a hassle with the engine numbers, if the bike has been a S/W then the engine number would be listed
S/W cannot be rego'd to stop the rebirthing of stolen bikes, so I would check with the law about building a new bike with the old engine before spending good money
Hi,
I live in Brisbane, Qld........would that make a difference ?
Haven't bought the frame yet......but the supplier will more than likely be Attitude Motorcycles......they make frames for most bikes, are ADR approved and come with manufacturers statement of origin
as stated b4, I'd make lots of calls b4 spending any more hard earned, if it's been written off, then the idea is it's not suppose to be re-registered, isn't it ?
you might get the whole thing finished only to find ya can't get it on the road.
BTW welcome to the forum
G'day Blacklable,
in the west , we put an application to the dept vehicle safety and standard tech section and get a referance #
to build an individually constructed vehicle. It must must have a report from an engineer to say it meets all adr standards.
A vehicle identification number is then issued , this will be a brand new motorcycle and you won't be able to rego it as
a harley . I don't thinkthe eng number will be a problem if its from a written off unit and legit.
Then put it over the pits and get it licensed , its that simple .
Hi Wally,
well, that's what i thought too.
When a vehicle is registered for road use, as far as i was aware.......they only use the Frame (chassis) VIN number - not the engine ........same as with a car. Anyone can put another engine in a car from any vehicle, as long as it's the same as the original
Anyway, will make a few more enquiries......just to make sure
Thanks for your reply
Hi everyone.....
just providing an update for all who are interested in my situation with the write off
After discussions with Queensland Transport, it would seem that as long as the frame meets with ADR requirements, they don't see a problem with fitting the engine and all the bits and pieces.......provided it meets the inspection requirements.
So, looks like i might be in Harley Heaven after all !
Might take a while.......but i'll get there !
My only advice .. as with all things GET IT IN WRITING
but good luck with it anyway
Yes.....i agree.........Damned Right i will
good luck with the build, should be one hell of a project bike
