How long should tappets last?

With only around 17,000 km since install my 120r is not well.

One of the screaming eagle high capacity lifters has failed me. The roller bearing doesn't roll so smooth anymore.

I since found out that it is recommended to change them after 20,000km.

Is that normal or is it normal only for screaming eagle lifters and other brands last longer?

    cheers

    Dave

I changed my sreamin chicken lifters out of my 120r really quickly after I fitted it
heard to many to many bad strories about them lifters
Also replaced valve springs with AV&V Beehives
I used harley B lifters and have S&S and Gaterman lifters ready to change out the B lifter soon

    Hi,

those lifters are good for 100000kms easy, seems to be the latest must change item out of your bike

there is a wear check page in your manual, go through it next time you have your lifters out

mine at 35000km were in perfect condition, put them back in, couldnt throw out good metal

    thanks

lifters , i change them out every 15-20 thou ks , my own engines i put new set in every 10 thou or less when doing next set of mods , the needle rollers are so fine that unless you strip them out and the axel ,  and have microscope to look at inner case hardened surface on roller and see the condition of the needles , best is to all ways change them , did you strip your lifters rollers and axel out to check for wear , some peopel confuse the outer roller face looking okay to be  fine , but not the case ,they can be on the start of a down hill run , could feel okay , look okay , but nowa days ,who knows were harely gets there lifters made ,  i have pulled out standard harley cams that have had less than 30 thou on them and case hardening on inner bearing , which is the cam needle roller in crank case starting to fail , it is cheap insurance to change these items out on each chnage or build , i see lots of bikes here that  i have to repair with failure in them areas or a, time bomb waiting to happen , lifters and cam bearing are the high wear areas in eng and when they fail ,they will send metal all thru eng , for the sake of couple hundred dollars, now , can save thousands down the track , cheers

Robots I think you are missing what this guy Is saying.
At 17000 kms he has a lifter that IS failing.
It is becoming more common with the newer
C lifters and the last batch of SE lifters.

    Hi Robots,

It was a Harley service consultant who told me about the Harley Davidson bulletin about changing the lifters in the 120r motors at 20,000km. (It was also the same time I was told that it wouldn't be covered by warranty).

One of the roller bearings has definitely collapsed but all four show signs of wear. The shiny coating on the rollers is missing in patches and strips.

I am going to try a set of S&S lifters (the ones they put I the 124) - hopefully they will last a little longer

I am disappointed they don't last long but grateful I found the issue before more damage was done.

    Cheers

    Dave

Before twin cam , they used bolt in lifter blocks, with twin cam the case is the lifter block. so if a lifter fails it could possibly take the cases with it. i changed my twin can lifters out & the set i used still ion it, it has almost 100,000k last i checked ( new owner )/

a shovel i had i put velva touch hydralic lifters they worked like evo but they must last as it was a long long time back i got them, & that shovel still going strong rides with twin cams to queensland & back never lets new owner down. was built to last & go quick. ( for a shovel )

hi dave , i guess there is few more evos with work ,and increased valve spring pressures and all can take its toll on the lifters , cam bearings etc , i havent had a evo , but probaly rebuilt 20 in last 3 years , have 2 here now to freshen up , most common problems that i get them is   lifter roller  bearing failure ,and inner cam needle roller , they are areas that need to done at regular intervals , they are great little engine to play with , cheers

l'd have to go out to the shed but l think Harley recommended to change lifters at 30 k mark on evo's. When l had my evo lifters were $80 each for genuine item and so easy to fit cheap insurance, And you are right about Velva touch lifters and blocks for a shovel they are the ducks guts , l fitted a set to my shovel as well as jims roller rockers and that old girl is as quiet as a mouse, basically evoises the valve train
