All done. Passed (as expected) with stock pipes. Rounded to a measurement of 92. Facts: • I was in and out within 30mins • They place a mic (connected to the SPL meter) on a stand at 500mm, 45 degrees to the pipes (they have a pre-made jig to ensure it’s correct) and then take 3 readings at the required revs (think he said they need 3 readings all within 1 or 2 db) • He tried to find the sticker on my bike stating the allowed noise but as there wasn’t one (probably as it’s an import) he had to go with the EPA stated limit of 94dB(A)@2500rpm • New bikes get +5db allowance over what is stated on the sticker IF the sticker says ADR83 (Australian Design Rule) • Standard for Harleys without ADR sticker (therefore older ones) is 94@2500 • At Redhead Automotive, they do an average 4 noise tests per day, 60/40 bikes to cars. No increase since Dungog but steadily increasing over time • The rider is supplied with a copy of the report which is submitted by the tester to the EPA • He suggested I keep the report on me whenever I am riding so if hassled by cops over noise I can prove I’ve already been tested (obviously that would only be possible if you are running the same pipes etc. as those stated on the report) • Report notes that standard pipes were fitted and “no labels sighted” • Report also notes that I had the heavy breather installed (“sports filter” on report) but he said they are rarely an issue on bikes (unlike on cars) Speculation/My Opinions: • The newer your bike, the louder it can be (though the rules get more complicated with allowable limits for new bikes) • I didn’t see him take any pics though he said he did. Even if he did, I’m pretty sure they are not part of the report to the EPA. I heard him say to the admin girl that the boss likes them to photograph everything • These guys just do the tests as a business exercise – they don’t agree with them. It’s purely a way to make a little extra money for the business. If you go in with an attitude and blame them, I reckon they’ll probably be less forthcoming with info/advice and might go over your bike in more detail • As berserker says, I reckon I could put my V&H back on then take the gamble over another inspection notice arriving in the post. If I do, stocks back on and around the merry-go-round we go Having said all that, my bike was running great with the stock pipes on so the thought did creep into my head of leaving them on. But it’s sounds like a Victa and at speed I can’t hear it at all over the wind noise. It’s just not cricket!
Great news in the report Weedoman. Did you ask about the three times busted and "they" take your bike off you rumor?
Cost? and can you claim it back if you have had a standard exhaust from the start.
I have a question,
My bike is a 2006 Dyna Lowrider although I have done an engine swap, with correct paperwork etc through roads and maritime.
This makes mine a modified bike with the engine capacity taken from 88 Cubes to 103 Cubes (2013 FXDB engine),
now when I got the bike blue slipped for the engine change their was no stationary noise test conducted, It had Screaming Eagle slip on's.
Now running a Supertrapp 2 into 1 (With some slight modification, ok well a 1" hole drilled into the end cap)
all paperwork was lodged with Roads and Maritime with the new engine number now on my Rego which I have renewed once since change.
How does this affect my stationary noise test requirements as with Harley they have different levels for different models.
Funny you should mention that, yes I do
Jeez ... Must be a c**t of a copper ( re: pipes 'n bikes ) Flip ?
Edit: There is a cop with perhaps a similar attitude in the middle suburbs of Newcastle, so I've been told ... ( I try to avoid the area ! )
No fucken rumour or inuendo bout it, all fact (hes a cunt of a thing) most weekends 6-8 of us (sometimes more)would ride to SWR, Crescent Hd, Fredo pub, Smithtown, Gladstone, Willawarrin or Bellbrook (do the loop through Sherwood) and all have a counter lunch and drinks at the pubs in these villages, we'd all spend about 30-40 bucks each, some would spend more, but no longer do we patronize these establishments let alone ride in these areas since Hwy Ptrl Sgt Smith came to town Even the other local Hwy Ptrl have warned me and others about him and his obsession with all that is aftermarket, we reply, yes we know, we've all met him on previous roadside consultations at some time or another with regard to pipes, not one infringement issued regarding the breaking of road rules or road safety, nothing but EPA notices, every one of em'. So, lost income for these venues that we would frequent and these small country pubs need all the patronage they can get, fucken shame too cause we really enjoy riding those back country roads, but ya never know where the cunt is going to be,or what car hes in Hook up for a ride with us one day Baz, were just up the road mate, all good blokes CHEERS
Simple soltion. Every time you seee the gentlman on the road make a work place health and safety complaint. He probably would be walking on the road without safety barriers etc. If enough are made he would eventually be spoken to. You are entitled to be in a safe work environemtn and he is at work. Safety trumps his police activity. Been done before. Believe me the police do not like being investigated by the safety inspectors and once a compliant is made it must be investigated.
had the plaeasure of meeting SGT S???? a couple of weeks ago in south west rocks , first off id like to say i have never met a bad cop and have always found that if you show them a bit of respect then they are usually fine. been pulled over on the bike and in my truck plenty of times and never had a drama until i met this #$$@. 5 of us left Taree on a sunday and went for a ride to SWR for a beer and a feed. while eating lunch at the pub we saw a cop on a bike cruising around but didnt take any notice of it. we finished lunch and only got about a KM down the road where we found the cop booking a car , he ran straight out onto the road and directed us to pull over which we did. He approached us and started ranting and raving about vance and hines pipes, certificates of compliance and noise tests ( the whole time while still wearing his helmet ) the first bike in the line was a new breakout with vance and hines pipe , he asked to see a certificate of compliance to state the pipes did not exceed the DB level stated on the sticker on the bike , he then asked the owner to start the bike and then he went right off about all the "loud pipes save lives " bullshit . he checked the owners helmet for sticker/ label and them proceeded to me as i was the second bike in line. he took one look at my bike and said he wasnt interested in me as i was a waste of his time { heritage fitted with S@S tapered turbos ) and then proceeded to rip into the other guys with vance and hines pipes.
He kept referring to certificates of compliance and noise tests , when i asked him where we could get a certificate of compliance from and where or who locally did the noise tests he could not answer, he stated that the noise test had to be done at 2500rpm to which i replied " how does that work with bikes that dont have tachos " his reply was that all Harleys have tachos to which i replied " mine doesnt ! " he then turned around and said that today was our lucky day as he had an emergency to attend and he jumped on his bike and took off ! we passed him about a km down the road heading back in to SWR just cruising along.
South West Rocks is a beautifull place and a great place to ride to . but its now off our list
