Got my 1st insepction notice from the NSW EPA in the mail on Friday. Tops.

21 days to get inspected. I'm running V&H Big Shots on my 05 Dyna (88ci) with a SE heavy breather. I'll be putting my stock pipes back on as I know there is no way I'll be under the 94dB(A)@2500rpm allowable limit. Glad I kept them (thanks for the newbie tip when I was considering selling them Choppaweeza!).

I doubt I'll need to go back to the standard air cleaner - anyone know different?

I intend to put my V&H back on after the test. Does anyone know how it works in NSW if you get done again? Do they take photos or record what pipes you are running when they do the test?

Anyone been tested at Redhead Automotive Centre? What are they like?

Ensure the original pipes are fitted and as for the air filter, not sure mate. they will also take photos.

Had mine tested at Campbelltown.

If you've got that notice in the mail as a complete surprise, then you've probably been dobbed in by a person annoyed with the noise while you've been out and about or by someone really annoyed in your neighbourhood. If it's the latter, changing the exhaust back again to the big shots will probably result in your next notice.

Otherwise it might have be one of the 4 million cops that ruined the Thunderbolt Rally in Dungog 2 weeks ago. Pricks.

No expert here but my understanding is that they take photos and if you get done again with 'illegal' pipes on they'll go in hard.

I had mine tested on Saturday morning. A cop decided that my V & H slip ons were too noisy. I changed back to my original mufflers and passed no problem (93 decibels). There are other issues with my bike, number plate, brake lines etc, but the tester did not seem interested. You need patience, I was there for over an hour, whilst the test itself took 45 seconds.

I had it done in Gladesville. Photo's are taken, and I was asked if the V & H had been removed. Remember, you are dealing with an EPA mechanic, he merely does the noise test and submits documents, he has no idea of the law.

I am going to chance it and put my V & H back on this weekend. I would imagine that the EPA will now have my rego on record, but I am not riding around on a bike that sounds like a sewing machine.

 

 

 

I think they (cops) are having crackdown in NSW ATM. Inviting riders to attend EPA authorized inspectors. A bloke i know was at a RBT last week and plod said a letter will be coming cause he couldn't see the stamping on his pipe. I think plod at rallies/shows/poker runs will be doing the same for a while. I wonder what has set em off?

I have been through the process twice the first time it failed by 2db, then came the defect notice with little time to rectify.
Fitted standard pipes for the test, all good. Once it passed refitted the S&S slip ons.
The second time I had enough and returned the bike back to standard and have since sold it.
If I cant have the sound I wont own a Harley.

Stock pipes are back on. Tested with an SPL meter from work - well under 94dB(A)@2500rpm.

EPA test booked in the for this Saturday. Is a few days after the due date on the EPA notice but I rang to advise and they said it's not a problem. Will update here when done.

V&H going straight back on after (well - that's the plan anyway)...

Be Careful, I think they use "C" weighting and this is more sensitive.
Also watch for over Revving the motor, I had this done. The idiot took the bike to 4k before he measured. It was still under. I complained but he ignored me. This was at Parramatta.

Received a letter from the EPA thanking me for my compliance. No offer to refund the $40.00 though.......V & H slip ons back on, we shall see how it goes.

The second time I was pulled over for a breath test , was given a talking too about the pipes and the noise and a month later it was time for another db test.

The Hunter Valley Area is a real hot spot for exhausts on all makes of bikes, not just Harleys Been done myself a while ago.

It has been a long time since I have been on here, stay under the radar, but I have had enough....

The hunter area is out of control, I have the standard exhaust back on for the last 18 months, I been done three times with my V & H big radius....

I hate the sound, sounds like a frigging singer sewing machine..

But even with the standard pipes, I get harrased every single time I go for a ride..

I can't go for a relaxing ride without geting pulled over and questioned, and eveytime I have to point out it is stock standard parts from the factory on the exhaust.

Been done only once luckily. The photos dont matter. They're more to prove the inspection took place than anything else. They need proof that your exhaust exceeds the decibel rating otherwise its impossible to prove from a legal perspective. Kinda like taking a breath test to prove you drove drunk. That is the purpose of the inspection and failing it is the only way to get fined. If you get done again it will just mean another $40 test and changing to stockies for the day. Nothing more.

Its a major pain in the ass but still better than the whisper quiet stock pipes in traffic with non attentive cagers who can't see you. My only suggestion is learning to change the pipes yourself (if you haven't already) as it costs a few hours labor for the mechanics to do it.
