    Hi All,

I need to conduct an 8,000 Km service on the Sportie over the next couple of weeks.  One of the items that need to be checked/adjusted is the Primary Drive chain.

In the Service Manual is tells one to find the loosest part of the chain.

Short of jacking the rear wheel off the ground then using 5th gear to find the spot, is there a better way of doing this??

The loosest part is normally 1/2 way between the sprockets. Once you have the cover off you will see what I mean, it's pretty obvious where the middle is.

    Hey tussock,

The way I read it was that there a tight and loose spots as you turn the engine over.
To make the adjustment at the loose spot.

And I need an easy way to turn the engine over......

Your on the money Fritz, not sure what tussuck was thinking .
You could probably tap the starter in neutral with plugs out, but a bit tricky.
A spot of white paint on the chain for a reference point helps.

    Thouht there was something wrong....

Im about to do an oil change on my sporty and looking through the service book and it tells to find the tight spot on the chain not the slackest.
Adjusting on the slackest part will make it too tight when the cog finds the tight point.

That will, over time, cause premature wear on the components.

    Yea Nomada,

I posted the post then thought to myself..... "Naaa, that's not right" But assumed everyone knew what I was on about.

    G'Day Nomada,

Well, got the service done this morning and checked Primary tension.
Did what you mentioned - pulled the plugs, top gear and no effort to turn the engine to locate the tight spot.
    Took all of 5 minutes.
