Removing cooked-on crap from chrome pipes

I noticed too late that there was some "stuff" smeared on my pipes. I think it might be oil. Now it's pretty cooked on. I tried removing it with some car wash liquid and a mildly abrasive wash pad. The easy stuff came off but there is some left. Any suggestions to remove the rest? Cut & polish? Chrome polish? How scratch resistant is chrome (V&H pipes)? Bit paranoid about scratching the chrome because it's in a pretty visible spot.

I have used HD Boot Mark Remover For Chrome Exhaust Genuine 93600069 (about $12 at your dealer) - works quite well.

I've heard of people using chrome polish, goo be gone (comes under a few similar names) and oven cleaner. Use (patch test) at your own risk as I've never done it myself.

    Hi there.

I've used bunched up cooking alfoil lubricated with plenty of water in a bowl. Dont rub hard. Give it time and it will / should take most marks off.

    Good luck

Purple Polish.  Search this forum for previous topics on the product by California Custom.  Great stuff!

Hi there, glad you had a win with the purple polish. Did you try any of the other methods as well. The alfoil perhaps.

Dear forum members, I had the pleasure of being trusted to take the young grandson of a member on the homeward leg of a south coast tour today. When I got home, I noticed the young lad had left a sizable portion of his boot melted on my exhaust pipe. Using my earlier recommended solution of crumpled alfoil and water, I submit the following pictorial DIY.

Some scrunched up cooking alfoil ready to go

At the halfway mark. Resist the temptation to rub harder. It will all come off. Dip alfoil in water frequently. Rub gently and lightly. The foil drags and you would swear its damaging the chrome. It's not.

Finished in about 10 mins, just dried with a cloth. They are 10 years old after all.

Don't use the foil for cooking anymore

In case its a trick question. That's the beauty of it. Borrow some from mum or the missus and it's cost you NOTHING. Cheers

For stubborn stuff try using wd40 instead of water-I've used it & it worked a treat.

Long time since anyone posted on this thread but I didnt want to start a new one.

Friends, since I bought my Deuce 5 odd years ago, I thought some moisture had gotten into speedo and condensed on inside glass. I could see it all the time and thought at one stage I'd have to pull it apart to clean off. Anyway, long story cut short, saw a youtube about cleaning headlight lenses uses metal polish and used some mothers metal polish on the glass and it came up a treat. Turned up was on the outside and normal polish cleaning wouldn't get it off.

Looks good now. What do you think? Give it a try on scuffed or dulled glass / plastic
