New to Melbourne and my importer FXR is now registered. Can any locals, Melbourne and surrounds, suggest any bike routes suitable for day-tripping out an back into the city?

I have found some routes just googling about, but of course locals always know the real goodies, so any suggestions would be appreciated. The areas about the Yarra Ranges to the East and Mt Macedon to the West look likely. Any tips on where to avoid, as well, or areas where Mr PoPo is nasty?

Reefton spur and back via healesville is great. The road thru the Yarra Valley State Forest to Noojee is excellent. Roads up around kinglake and Whittlesea also.

Careyman, I guess it would be inner-west. But it is only 5 minutes for me to be on the Calder Freeway or the M2, and 10 mins to be about the M2/M80 ring road.

Thanks to others for the suggestions. I will google map the areas and roads mentioned.

    Any other suggestions welcomed.

Im out west too, maybe try heading out along the western highway then nth to trentham, then east to woodend, lancefield  kilmore, wallan, wittlesea, kinglake, st andrews, and then head home all these little towns are great and they normally have quiet roads, another option is to head sth go to geelong and follow the coast around to clifton springs portarlington etc  (there is a good bike friendly pub at st leonards facing the beach) and pending how much time u have u can head right around to torqay or further..another ride we do is one of the best known...great ocean road...I bought a book at RACV that is awesome for planning rides

Try out through Romsey - Lancefield - Heathcote (coffee at the big servo) then to the back of Elmore. Turn right and go past the 'Field Day' complex, then turn left and go the back way into Rochester. Lunch at the pub beside the Mitre10. Turn around and come back!! Plenty of good twistys and hills.

I live in the upper Yarra, the road to reefton is over my back fence.

I don't ride there on weekends because there are too many boy racers and police.

I usually head south from Junction via Noojee then down to Warrugul and then go down the monash to pakenham then from pakenham to gembrook, gembrook to launching place. Its a good little ride.

It don't matter where you live , you have some GREAT roads there , i travel to victoria at least 3-4 times a year just to ride the roads there , You have the ocean road , the alpine road , its a good ride up near the nsw border cann river , plus countless good roads where i've not even knew where the fack i am , the only horrible part for me is when i get out of the adelaide hills and start making my way to vic.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I have written it all down, especially the tips about specific routes and stopping places, and am going over the google map.

I'll check out the rides and meetups section too. If anyone has further suggestions fire away. I like multiple forms of rides, highways excepted (a bit boring). Twisty up and downs always good, and back roads where one can be 80+ regularly are nice too.
