Clunk?

Copped a clunk the other day on the FLH (1985) hoping its just the selector but rear wheel locks trying to push forward but will free wheel in reverse. Any clues (apart from "ride it backwards";) appreciated. Got no drive from the gearbox. Thinking it might be a busted gear?

Could be anything mate... from a bent/b roken selector fork to the 5th gear mainshaft. You going to have to pull things apart to inspect.

Start with the tranny top cover as you will be able to remove and inspect the drum and forks with just the top cover removed. Plus inspect most other things!

Just had my 86 tranny on the bench to replace a stripped 5th gear mainshaft. Its not hard to pull things apart, so long as you leave the tranny case in the bike.

not something stupid like a pulley bolt loose and when going forward catches just thinking good luck with that one

Had a listen today (bike is stuck at work) clunk is coming from the front left of the box near where the selector rod enters the gearbox casing. Will pull the top off and check there first. Looks like a long lunch break tomorrow. Perthhog the bike will roll backwards but not forward so I dont think its a pulley bolt (forgot to look today) but will have a gander tomorrow. Cheers guys will let you know.

Bike is still at work, hopefully get it home this weekend where I can access the box better. Had the top off of it to look at the selector and cant see what is binding. Because the box is jamming and stopping forward movement, I have taken the bolts out of the rear pulley so I can push it/winch it on to the trailer. First job will be to remove the selector and see if something is bent.
