I have an 06 fxst softail 1450 and was told it had vance and hines bigshots exhaust, but when i bought quiet baffles for the pipes they dont fit. The inside diametre of my pipes is 40mm, is there a difference in the bigshot pipes for 86 to 06 and 07 to 14 models. Can anyone tell me which pipes i have.  Any advice appreciated.

They look like bigshots to me.
You took the end caps off before (and yes its been missed before) trying to slip them in? Are they too big or too small? They should be a tight fit.

I had to remove the heat sheilds completely to insert baffles V21869, and they are to big. The inside diametre of the heat shield is 50mm but the diametre of the pipe they have to insert into is 40mm.

Yes they are Bigshots. Think we need to go back to basics you should not have to remove heat shields and pipes can stay on bike. End caps have to be removed and the standard baffles would still be inside remove old baffles and slip in new quiet baffles. i just checked my old standard baffle and they are 50mm.

They dont have any baffles in them at the moment. The heat shields fit over the end of the pipe, now the baffle will fit inside the heatshield but not the actual exhaust pipe which is smaller and there is only about 45mm of heatsheild pipe before you get to the actual exhaust pipe. There is a hole in the actual exhaust pipe for baffle fitment but as i said this pipe is only 40mm  (1 3/4 inch) internal diameter, and baffles i have V21869 are 50mm (2 inch) and 260mm long.

Okay. The end of the pipes have END CAPS on them. At the back is a "screw" you undo and you can pull off the caps. You then take off the heat shields - It is a cover that goes over the pipes (the total length of the pipe) totally different to the end cap.
When you have taken off that cover off each pipe there is ANOTHER screw (unless its been removed) at the back of the pipes that you undo, so when you look in the pipes you will see your old baffle, which will probably be hard to get out, but I use a tent peg (metal) to hook it and drag it out.

Then you worry about putting in your new baffles.

Stick up a pic of where you're up to if you want exact help.

Here is a write up of replacing you baffles.  Take note of the heat shield part and undoing the clamps.
