Stripped down my evo yesterday cos it was blowing a bit of smoke at idle. Wasn't expecting what I found, thought it was just valve guides or seals leaking,

They are 2 very deep score marks.
Just a matter of now deciding how radical to go

It must of happened with previous owner and they have just honed it, put new rings in and put it back together
You can see the hone marks going over the score marks

Given that the scratches have been there all along; is it a fair assumption to make that they are the cause of the smoke?

If the smoke just started then they may not be the cause and your original thoughts around the oil seals may be right.

not much goin on there. top pistons look a bit damp though. if it was only smokin at idle id say seal and/or guides. i actually had a seal that dislodged ans was ridinf up and down with the valve. still didnt blow too much smoke though when i was moving along.p mainly accelerating from the lights.

anyway, point is your here now so make the most of it.

hi those marks are east west in bores , not north south ,so is uncommon to see ,  i had evo here recently with realy bad marks on side of bore , it apeared that particals came off side of piston from lip of piston  just above the gougen pin area and left scores 10 times worse than in you bore , had to fit new cyclinder and bore both to same spec

Picture doesn't show it real well but they are really deep. Have just ordered new barrel for it

you will need to flush out crank cases best you can , the particals will more than likely in you cases and need to get them out , or do pistons have them enbedded in them ,

the carbon on the piston tells me that one if was  new , was fair while ago , looks like its been there for a while   ??? i maybe wrong but the pistons are also maybe 9.5 comp ,or valve stem seals been bad for while and oiled up quick  , maybe before spending any more have bore checked for size ,the old ones maybe at  all ready .040+and you will need 2 barrels and pistons , just a thought , other wise you will be going down same road as patch up , cheers

it's got Kieth Black pistons Std Size and yes Dyno they are 9:6-1 compression. Having rear barrel checked and maybe go next o/size also having the heads, valves and seal checked also.
