Hi,
I am new to this forum and just bought a 2006 Sportster 1200. The engine oil tank looked to be filled to the right level and the bike appeared to run fine, no oil leaks to the floor. I put it in for a service and they said only 50 mls of oil was in the transmission and the put in a litre. I went for a ride and when I got to the destination oil was all over the right side of the bike and the engine oil tank was overfilled, I didn't check after the service. I have syringed out 300 ml and it now appears ok. I am trying to understand whether the 1 litre of transmission oil had passed into the engine oil and overflowed it or whether the service guys had it all wrong?
Does this ring any bells?
thanks
Dave
mate sounds like a blown seal, when they blow they eather suck oil from primary , or blow it into primary, don't ride it like that as primary oil mixs with your engine oil. have to pull primary cover off pull primary drive off it's the seal at the crank.
Thanks Krash Kinkade, I was hoping not to here this but it confirms my suspicion.Do you know if this a common problem and if it is an expensive fix? Is it usually just the seal and not bearing issues? Thanks again.
Well i've been riding Harleys since the late 1970's & as yet have not experienced this problem. but on USA forums they seem to think it's common. but don't know why, unless HD changed the seal they used to use.
i don't think it's a hard job, but make sure you go to someone that knows what they are doing, i would not go to a HD dealer but i would use genuine HD parts unless a good experienced HD wrench told me other wise. if you have basic skill & a work shop manual & the right tools. but if you are not confident don't try it. i'm not 100% possitive but i'd say you can replace that seal with cases together. you would drain any oil that is in primary out,, the remove outer primary cover, remove primary drive remove alternator then you are at the seal. take care in removing old seal take note what way seal faces. check if this seal has ever been replaced in the past & if it was fitted corectly. good luck
.
Thank you.
