Faulty speed sensor fix

I was on a ride interstate around victoria during the week on my 07 fatty. Bike was going great until after I left bendigo, at which time the speedo stopped working. I pulled over and checked the connections but they were fine. So on I rode and up a hill under load, the check engine light goes on. I also noticed the sixth gear indicator light on the dash didn't illuminate. As I approached melbourne off the highway, I noticed my idle was all over the place too and my indicators wouldn't self-cancel. Sometimes the idle was really high and at other times it was stalling.

Keen to get the bike sorted, I took it to a dealer. From the check engine code it was diagnosed as a faulty speed sensor. The part was around $70 and the labor bill was around $300.

I googled the symptoms for a faulty speed sensor and on the USA forum there were a few posts discussing all of the symptoms my bike had. But it also suggested it was a quick and relatively easy fix, so I'm a bit annoyed I didn't buy the part and do it myself. But I was interstate and had limited tools. Does $300 labor sound right?!

Mate change the sensor yourself. $300 labour to fit a $70 part. Absolute bullshit. The sensor is located on the top of the gear box just blow the starter motor. An allen key is all you need to replace the part and would take 10 mins if that.

Thanks aj. Just what I thought. I'm really pissed off. They were talking about taking off the rear wheel and selling it as a bigger job (even though taking off the wheel isn't a big job). It wasn't until afterwards that I looked it up and suspected I was gonna get ripped off.

They've taken advantage of a traveller. It's one of if not the biggest chain of dealers in aust. I'm going to write to their mgt.

It has already been fixed (3 days ago). Just pissed off when I saw the bill. I was travelling from interstate and didn't know what the problem was until they took the bike in.
