I recently completed a 3000km solo ride around Vic and SA and the biggest pain for me was stopping when I wanted to check my phones GPS to work out my next turn. So i'm in the market for a GPS. I know I can mount my phone on my bars but the point is I don't want to see my phone all the time.

Keen to see the make/model of the GPS you're running and perhaps a pic of how you have it mounted.

Hmmmmm, I've been wanting to read something like this for ages.
Not keen on having my phone up on the bars, what about a custom made pouch in the tank bib.
Not the easiest to "watch" but might be an alternate. I'll check with some ADV mates and see what they use.

I had a Garmin Zumo 660 on my last bike.
Its waterproof and can be used on the bike or in the car.
Nice size screen, bluetooth for phone connection, mp3 player.

I just havent got around to fitting it to my Wideglide.

Many options for mounting a phone or gps but very difficult to see them with the glare of the sun

Hi there.

I hope you will indulge me. I recently bought a Garmin ZUMO 550 to fit to my Deuce.

I use a couple of different mounts. One (standard) that has a U bolt that fits on the handle bar. I bought another one that connects into the riser bolt hole with an elongated bolt.

This way I can mix and match the garmin and GoPro between mounts.

I've attached some pics (sorry if a bit dark) which show the different options. The Garmin mount is hardwired to the battery under the seat but can be disconnected when I want to remove the mounts entirely.

I have also fitted a dual water resistant USB charger port, also wired to the battery which I plan to use to power the GoPro and my phone while on the go.

There's a great crowd in Sydney which is cheapest by far for Ram Mounts

BTW, I've been recently experimenting with a TomTom Rider 2 with Blutooth helmet headset on the same mounts. I reckon the ZUMO might be a better unit although I like the screen picture with the TT.

Another option is to keep your using your phone gps and get a bluetooth setup for you helmet.

All the voice should come through. You'll just miss out on seeing the turns.

I've got a garmin Montana GPS mounted to my road trail, garmin cradle/charger and a "ram" mount on my bars. Works well other than my klx stator being a piece of shit and not throwing out enough charge. On the softtail I've just been using the sena Bluetooth setup with my phone tucked away in the saddle bag. Like China said works well can listen to tunes and best of all no temptation to look at the bloody thing or start fucking around with it at the lights.

I just use a car Garmin GPS on my street glide. A simple $12 1 inch ball bracket clips on and i run the power fron the cig lighter. I bought a waterproof case that keeps the water off it. Have done Canada, Usa and most of Aust with it. All up think it owes me $130

I use the free "whereis" app on my iPhone and have the 12th man, billy birmingham, guiding me around. It runs wirelessly to my helmet via a small bluetooth receiver velcro'd to the back of my helmet. Speakers fitted inside my helmet are plugged into the Bluetooth receiver. I rely on voice instructions but if I need to see a map, my iPhone sits in a windowed waterproof case that is gently stuck to my tank via magnets. It's a hd case so designed not to damage the tank.

Bike GPS will be my next purchase . 2 waterproof motorcycle units up on Aust ebay are  , Strike Genius @ $275- , and Garmin Zumo 390 @ $297- . Please comment fellas .

See link below for the Harley phone tank cover. It's the pic at the bottom of the page. They sell them in Harley shops. The magnets are underneath soft material and padding so it won't mark the tank or move.

I bought a cheap Bluetooth receiver off eBay but it was crap and unreliable. I bought the Bluetooth receiver from jaycar electronics. Helmet speakers were cheapie off eBay from China. At high speeds with open face helmet the sound isn't quite loud enough for me so I fixed that with a small aaa-battery powered amplifier which is also velcro'd to the back of my helmet. Again I got this via eBay.

Attention Tim, here are the comparison specs between Garmin Zumi 390LM and Strike Genius that you requested.

Firstly, the Acronym for Strike Genius is SG. Perhaps this is all you need to know. " border="0" src="/DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif" />

Screen size: SG = 3.5". GZ = 4.3"

Bluetooth: Yes for both

Waterproof: yes for both

Turn by turn directions: yes for both

Glove friendly: yes for both (neither are capacitance touch screens like Apple so you don't have to take gloves off.

Free Lifetime map updates: SG =??.  GZ = yes 

My opinion: choose the Garmin. The Strike has a small integrated sunshade, but unless it's the middle of the day it's going to be useless. I am not familiar with the Strike product, but I'm guessing their sales volume would be a fraction of Garmin. Garmin have the best (intuitive) user interface I've ever come across, and their maps are more accurate. And they have a bunch of cool features including an optional tyre pressure monitor.
 

And the Bluetooth receiver from jaycar is a digitech aa-2085

Tom Tom Rider 2nd edition similar to the one I recently bought, for sale in Perth.

Seems to the have everything. Only prob with the TomTom is if you want updated maps it costs about $100 for 4 updates over a year. These units are a couple years old now but mine works a treat. Unless you hard wire the unit to the bike you have to use the wall charger with 4mm plug. A micro USB wont charge it like other GPS do.

My Garmin Zumo 550 came with lifetime maps so consider that when making an offer.

Are the mods to the interior of your helmet to accomodate helmet speakers major or is it easy? Anyone?

Depends on the speakers and the helmet. The soft,fabric speakers can be simply moulded into position and stick with the Velcro. Some helmets, like shoei's open face platinum r are designed to fit speakers easily.
