XL1200N detonating

Hi, this is my first time posting here. I'm looking for a bit of advice.

I have a 2011 XL1200N Nightster it has 3000km on the clock. At full throttle it seems to be deonating. I always use BP Ultimate 98 octane.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic with a dyno in Sydney?

    Any help appreciated thanks

Do you always go to the same servo? Some substitute cheap crap for premium.

Always the same servo unless it's a long ride and have to fuel up on the road. There is a similar one with the same noise on YouTube but it doesn't have the resolution

Made any changes to the bike? How long has it been happening?

Try fuel from a different servo.

No the bike is completely standard at the moment. It's happened around the last three tanks of fuel but in saying that I don't really use full throttle a lot.
I'm considering booking it into blacktown H-D unless someone can recommend a better Sydney tuner/mechanic

I wouldn't bother with a mechanic until I tried (as Smokey61 said) another fuel station. I'm not bagging BP, but I don't go near my local station after having bad fuel from them twice in the space of a few months. You'ld be surprised how many problems a petrol station can have, without ever mentioning them to the public.

Also don't forget the warmer weather promotes pinging, especially if you've been sitting at traffic lights or putting around traffic pretty slow, as soon as you roll it on it'll ping. Don't load the bike up and you'll be right, or get a summer tune. The knock sensors are good for +/- 2 degrees of spark advance, if you're on the limit as you normally are in summer, best to retard a couple of degrees.

With only 3k on the clock its highly unlikely to have a vac leak but i would not rule it out and is easy to check. I run more timing in my bike than most do and my bike doesn't ping. Goto a different servo as mentioned. XL's dont have knock sensors.

Thanks for the info. Will definitely try a different servo. It's due for a service so if it doesn't go away I'll let the
Figure it out. Has everyone heard good things about apl performance bikes at south Windsor?

On my last trip through the back of NSW I bought premium from a servo and for the rest of that tank the bike ran like I'd filled it with kero.

Try using 95. My dyna hates 98, especially shell. Sometimes I even use 91. Is it possible you may be mistaking something else as pinging? Loose exhaust flange, muffler gasket, exhaust bracket or HEATSHIELD?
I had a heatshield clamp come loose. Rattled like hell under load.
