883 Sporster Timing (2013) ??

    Hi All,

I have a 2013 883 Iron fitted up with Pipes & Air Cleaner. TTS MasterTune looks after the AFR Table and over time have sorted my VE Tables out.

It's now time to look at ignition timing.

I run nothing less than 98 Octane fuel, always have done from day one till present day - this will not vary.

Looking at the Timing Tables it appears the timing is pretty conservative and have made a general advancement across the board of 3 degrees with no pinging.

From your experience, how far can I safley before I stop and make the finite adjustments??

    Fritzables.

    G'Day Hilly,

Yea, I guess your right to a point, but I am one of those types who can't leave things alone. I can remember when I was a kid and bought my foist bike (BSA M20) for $10 at High School, I had to bomb the motor on that
    - SU Carby, Grinding CAMs on a Bench Grinder..... pretty scary stuff when I look back.

I am a Motor Mechanic by trade and have built a number of performance engines but they have always been water cooled Jap engines - both 2 and 4 Stroke. Used to race GP bikes that I built myself.
This is my first recent Air Cooled non-Jap bike so I am a little wary, thus the question.

I have already gone 3 Degrees all round with no pinging detected - just need to know how far I can safely go before looking more closely at things.

If you get back what you put in then leave it, if it make barley any difference then take it back out.

    Morning Hilly,

    Thanks for the reply.

Yea, I have done countless runs and long rides to gather data for the VEs, so I am reasonably happy with that side of the fence.
Correct, the base Calibration is the SXD171-02-B2.MT7
Out of the box it used a CLB of 600 so I took this to 620 prior to DataTuning - but thinking back at it, I have no idea why I chose that number. This is one of the areas where I fall down and doing my best to understand all this. Back in the old days I had jets to change - not the case these days.

The intent would be to stay with Closed in the areas cells as per the original calibration, but as I become more confident that I am choosing the right numbers in my tables, then I will open up sections of the AFR Table at a time till I am running full open (except in the High RPM WOT cells where I will leave that closed).

    Thoughts ???

    G'Day Hilly,

Yea mate, knew that all RED cells are Closed Loop.
I think I will start again.
Would you leave The Desired AFR at 14.64 in the CLB Voltage Calculator? As we I use 98 Premium fuel I was going to use a Stoch of 14.7

    Hey Hilly,

Mate, this stuff is awesome. I could read info like this for days. Thanks very much for the advice.
    Very much appreciated.
