Got the frame straightened on the weekend - time to fix the motor.
Pulled the rocker gear out and found a buggered lifter - there were a handful of rollers in the bottom of the area where the cam lives . See picture.
Heres a pic of the bits in question -
Theres a mark on the gears on the plastic bizzo as well so I figure its bin material as well- the cam has nicks in it so I will get a new one.It has H-306- I or J engraved on the last lobe and 03-97-CP on the one next to it. Anyone able to identify this cam and its charachteristics from these numbers?
I dont know a lot about these engines, in your opinions would this engine need to be completely stripped to ensure no bits of broken lifter have gone any further than this area of the motor?
The motor was still running after the prang, but only on one cylinder - I assumed the rollers were out of the lifter , the inner and outer bits of the lifter are on the right in the pic and the rollers fit in between them. All those rollers were directly below the cam in the bottom of the case in the pic.I will pull one of the other ones apart tonight and check if the rollers are actually out of a lifter .
I googled the part number for the cam and found it is a Crane - I think it may be a bit big for what I had in mind.
The cam bearing is fine, its still in the case and is intact. The needle rollers are out of the lifter, I just reassembled it and the rollers fit perfectly in the lifter. Found all but two of them , may have to remove the oil pump and see if there is any damage/bits in there.
A mate of mine has got all the gear to do the job. He builds roll cages for fally/race cars and does fabrication work for hot rods, etc. Is also building a couple of trikes for someone.
Stripped the motor out of the bike and tore it down yesterday - found all the rest of the rollers in the oil pump - one of the rollers had jammed between the housing and a gear and sheared the woodruff key so the thing wouldnt have had any oil pressure , also had a blown head gasket . Bottom end feels O.K. but its off to get the cases split and bearings redone next week . The heads will be going in for a freshen up as well.
3 months later and the bike is getting close - lucky we have a 12 month riding season in sunny W.A.
Motor was buggered so I bought a second hand one from a mate who is going 127C.I. and fitted it - only problem was it is out of a softail and the farkin' crank was different sorted out now though.
Paint is done , pipes etc are on - need brake lines made up and wiring finished
Found this pic on the web - taken outside the shop that did the initial rebuild in the States - obviously before it was pranged.
Fired it up last night - gotta get a brake hose made today and bleed the brakes then take it for a squirt
Gonna try and have it ready for licencing on Monday.
Looking good Blacky, good luck on Monday crossed fingers it gets through.
No luck - pinged the mirrors and its too loud It also needs an engineer to sign off on it because its an imported vehicle for fucks sake Engineer had a look today and did his bit , just need to fit a set of borrowed pipes tomorrow and hopefully it will go over . Took it for a ride out along Mundaring Weir Road - for testing purposes
Got it licenced today now I just need to put my pipes, mirrors, etc back on and its all good.
Go for a ride up to Chidlow pub tomorrow arvo to look at the tits , and off to the nostalgia drags on Sunday. Happy days !
