Sounds like you will need compression releases. Assuming you are running flat top pistons, 86cc heads with 0.030" HG your CR is a little over 10.1:1 & just short of 190 cranking pressure. Even if your heavy duty could turn it over easily without releases, the starting ring gear would chew itself fairly quickly, so comp releases would be a good idea.- Rob

Cheers Kiwi Rob Looks like compression Releases my heads are stock but have flat top pistons as part of 103 kit It seemed to start a lot easier when it had the Thundermax on Then when i went to tts Its seemed to cause hard starting problems .the motors done 30000 kays since the kit was done cheers Steve .

I have the same combo as you 10.4:1 comp but with crane 320 cams.

cold it will just turn over with a new battery but baulks on the starter once in a while when hot, have fitted manual compression releases & alls good.

    cheers Yob

Hi, The SE 211 cams are a starter motor muncher. The cranking compression seems to be higher than allot of other grinds.. You need to have some sort of compression release fitted. I use the S&S easy start cams so that no other mods are required. Sometimes a shop can change to the easy start cams cheaper than removing heads and fitting either manual or electric decomps.
    Cheers Brian.

Have the same probelm with my bike.

Bites back on the starter. coughs out through the throttle body cold or hot but mainly when it is warm to hot..

Was told to look at the primary compensator and change it out with a SE version.

Was told to look for metal on the magnet in the primary as well

    Bike has done 37,000 km

Have the parts on order and will be changing them out through the week

Will let you know if it fixes the problem

Running 205 cranking pressure with a baby small duration cam. No decamps but run travel limiters and yet to have a problem with hot or cold starts. Might be an option as cheaper and quite easy to do.

    Hi Dynoharley,
Your are clearly one of the lucky ones. As apposed to the countless customers that have paid me their hard earned to repair their starter motors and replace their ring gears after the teeth have been broken off. Even the engines with decomp buttens are a problem because the owners admit they dont push them all the time.
That is why we only use the S&S easy start cams. Amazing hassle free starting.
    Cheers Brian.

There are adjustments that can be made to aid in starting but the ECM can only do so much. It must issue spark and fuel in order to get the engine to run and keep running. If the starter cannot spin it over in all conditions there is nothing any ECM can do about it. If you would like some help checking your calibration send me a copy of what you have in it and I can take a look at it for you.

You calibrations are stored on your PC at "My Documents\TTS\HD\MasterTune-HD\Big Twin Models" Make sure that you installed everthing and ran the TTS Software updater and that it shows everything is installed and up to date.

Do a search on your PC for "*.MT8" using the Window search function. This will locate all files with the .MT8 file extension on your PC.
