Only got one pic of my new bike (until I get my home computer repaired). Here it is in all its glory!
Lookin good .
So far so good re coolant (after 830 KM) - hasn't lost a bit.
I do however, run the pump and fans for a couple of minutes after shutting down. This may have helped in conserving coolant.
Congrats on your new ride.
A question for you new 2014 "Twin Cooled" Tourers,
If say the water pump failed and or all the coolant leaked out, (ie, the water cooling system completely fucked up), would the bike operate just the same , (operating temp wise), as any "pre" 2014 model 103 cube motor, (or 110 cube if you have a CVO). ?? They still have the oil cooler installed. If you were in the middle of bum fuck , and the water cooing system failed , I take it, you would ride it without any concerns to the closest dealer and get the system fixed, not like a car !!! Whatever the answer is, I"D STILL FUCKING LIKE ONE !!!! Cheers .
I'll check what my owner's manual has to say on the matter.
Notwithstanding, I think the bike would run hotter than a pre '14 103" because they upped the compression ratio in the twin cooled motor (more compression = greater heat). I think you could probably get away with riding it on the highway without water - but city riding would probably be different.
Will check owner's manual and get back with a definitive answer.
Checked the owner's manual - It doesn't mention whether or not you can go without water specifically.
However, it does talk about the engine high temperature light.
It says that if the high temp light illuminates to check coolant level, so it is safe to assume that if there is a problem with cooling the light will illuminate.
Here's the clincher - it says if the engine high temp light illuminates to stop the engine lest damage occurs.
Going on this, it is safe to assume that one wouldn't be able to run the bike without water or pump working as the temp light would illuminate, indicating engine damage occurring.
Thanks for info on the cooling system from the manual.
Cheers Mark
No Worries.
Run in is going fine - just hit 900 Kms. Doing the run in on the city commute so there is plenty of variation in speed like the manual suggests is good.
No real problems to be aware of, you will love it! It does make a little rattling noise (only lasts for a second or so) on cold startup - but I checked with the stealer and they said that this is normal lifter noise - not to be a concern.
The only issue I had was trying to update the infotainment system software - I kept getting a "corrupt file" error. I think this is because I was using work computer and the virus checking software was corrupting the file. Got it done successfully at the dealer.
Enjoy your new ride! They rock!
Just a note - you may want to run the water pump and fans for a couple of minutes after shutting down to avoid "boil over". This is easy - all you do is shut off the engine using the engine cutoff switch on the right handlebar switchblock. After shutting off engine (leaving the ignition on) all you do is roll on the throttle until you hear the fans start up...
And yes, I am a member of the Canberra HOG chapter. This is not my first Harley so I have been a member for a while now.
Is that why they,ve been having teething probs ?
G'day Graham,
I took to running the pump and fans after reading some horror stories in HD forums (the US Forum) about bikes losing their coolant after shutdown.
After reading this I thought it cheap "insurance" to run the fans lest the same happen to me.
At least no harm can come from doing this...
G'day Hoppoz,
You won't look back after getting a Harley - the effortless cruise, the comfort - Heaps better than a Ducati!
You'll enjoy all the benefits of being in the Harley family also. There's nothing quite like it!
Hoppoz Sorry for the delay in responding but Bali beckons several times a year for us West Coast folk....... The highway pegs I am using are shown below which are 6 years old now. I first fitted them to my 2008 Street Glide, then on to the 2012 Street Glide and now the 2014 Ultra Classic. The quality is still good considering the crap thrown up from the road and they are fully adjustable to suit my tall frame http://www.harley-davidson.com/store/360-adjustable-highway-peg-mount-kit I have kept this bike in stock format with the addition of a centre stand which is a must for any Tourer....yes it is a MUST have item - it makes cleaning easy and refuelling a piece of cake with no more effing around wobbling the bike to get a full tank. Secondly, I have fitted SE Fatshotz slipOns which caused a bit of a drama until I remapped the bike. This is the first time I have had a run issue with an aftermarket exhaust (and it is a Harley product...go figure) but all is good now and the bike is annoyingly quiet around town and has a mild note when you power on in the bush which is good so that you can appreciate the new Boom Box sound system features. This is all personal preference and I have run different after market exhausts in the past and my mates also run different exhausts which they swear by - in the end it all boils down to what YOU like. There are heaps of claims on HP and Torque gains but this is subjective with little supporting information. But who cares, if a rider thinks their bike is faster and gruntier with their new exhaust that is all that matters. A 96 cube riding along side a 120 build at the speed limit makes you understand the golf handicap rating and I am sure this comment will arc up a few......FYI I had Wild Pigs exhaust on my last ride and they are great value for money but too noisy for me on long rides.
I have also fitted an aftermarket recurve screen to minimise buffetting (I am 6'2" which sort of works but the screen template is poor and it doesn't fit correctly - I have had to fill the screen/fairing gaps with silastic to stop water and dust filling up the fairing housing
