Hopefully it rolls out across the country. And they provide adequate education to car drivers.

    A couple of things...

First; this is NSW only (which is a start I know but it doesn't help riders in other states)

Second; this is lane filtering and not lane splitting so we can still get booked for splitting between moving vehicles.

Still, it's nice to see one thing go our way for a change.

    More info from the SMH>

"Motorcyclists will be allowed to legally ride between cars on NSW roads from July as part of new measures to ease traffic congestion.

The NSW government on Wednesday became the first state in Australia to legalise the practice of lane filtering following a successful two month trial.

Under the scheme, fully-licensed riders will be able to ride through stationary traffic at speeds up to 30 km/h, but not in school zones, beside kerbs or next to trucks and buses."

It is not often that any government from either side of the room does something that is in everyone's better interest. Which flavour is the NSW government? Ignore that question. It is hypothetical and has no bearing on what is a good decision for everyone.

Can someone with FaceFuck please give a few examples of the

Thanks for that Dp. (edit - and Smokey)

Amazing isn't it, the level of bias against two wheels? I have believed for a very long time now, that it should be mandatory for every person applying for a car Learner's Permit to be required to have held a motor cycle Licence for 12 months.

I cannot speak on any other state, but in Queensland, before a person can be issued with a heavy vehicle Learner's Permit, they must have held an open car Licence for one year.

I think if every applicant for a car Learner's Permit was required to have held a motorcycle Licence for one year, this may help prevent this common bias against two wheels.

Of course there will be someone who will say, "Holding a Licence does not equate to operating experience because a person can be issued a motorcycle Licence but never actually ride one". I would counter this by saying "Show me a 17 year old who doesn't want the ability to drive themself around and I will show you a 17 year old who does not want a Driver's Llicence".

[Further Edit] One more comment - I note the way some media has reported this as 'motorcyclists can now duck and weave through traffic'. That proves the bias exists.

In SA it's the opposite to your suggestion, you have to have your car licence (L's at least) before you can apply for a motorcycle licence. Car L's required a written test while bike L's required a written test and a practical test.

I got my car L's on my 16th birthday and my bike L's two weeks later. SA doesn't require another motorcyclist to shadow you while riding. Absolute freedom while my school buddies had to wait for their grandma to finish her cup of tea before accompanying them on a drive. And the best part was the local drive through bottle shops presumed you must be 18 to ride a motorbike.

It's the hard done by cagers who choose not to ride.... bitch about motorcyclists as they themselves are stuck in traffic congestion!! It's purely because they can't move on through the slow moving or jammed up traffic that has so much opposition.... Personally, I really can't move past in most circumstances as my bars are too wide.... Ha Ha Ha, unless I put some pointy grips on and then watch them separate - LOL!

About time though.... watch the cagers move over when they (if) they see you coming in between, being a pessimist I wouldn't expect it... just saying.

My wife is one of those people I despise for not learning to drive a manual. So I drive an auto now. All too easy. But I think that is why so many people text and drive, it would be much harder in a manual.

Perhaps they should split the licence classification like some are suggesting: manual licence first, then upgrade to an auto licence. Then the penalty for texting and driving - lose your auto licence status.

Too true Wimbo. If a person cannot drive a manual then that person cannot drive. It is as simple as that. In Queensland, to get a HR Licence, one must do the practical test driving a heavy vehicle that is not synchromesh equipped. One is required to demonstrate the ability to drive. If a person cannot drive a manual gearbox, that person really cannot demonstrate the ability to drive.

Sorry guys, auto or manual? Synchro or crash box? Are you living in the past? Should everybody have the ability to drive a semi trailer before they are allowed to get a car license? How many of you can hook up a B-double?

Also, what does this have to do with lane filtering?
