I have been intending to up the power a little on the bike for a while now but other projects have gotten in the way.
Looking for best bang for the buck suggestions with the following in mind:
Mostly solo riding with very little peak hour traffic stuff. I want to be able to use 6th gear still from 100kph up Already have a tmax and quiet SE mufflers. I dont want a super loud pipe Chasing a nice fat midrange over peak hp numbers Already run BP98 all the time
I was previously talking to SWHD and the 103 with SE255 cams kit was suggested. Is this still the best bet and what other options are around that wont blow a modest budget? Is money better spent on heads than cubes?
cheers Surly
Hiya Surly,
I have just had a cam change to SE 204's, they are Lcheapos but they give me enough bang for a moderate buck. Gives a little more TQ and HP without the pain of a rebuild and high cost etc. When the motor is stuffed I may look at doing something more radical, if I have any demerits left

I found all the cam related part numbers from Scotty's thread.
Would 29904-07A Stage 1 103 kit give me the rest of the parts I need leaving only the cometic head gasket?
Thanks for the advice
It's started
103 and 54H as suggested. USPS dropped the gear off friday morning. M&M get the big thumbs up, great prices and great service too.
Luckily the boss also rides a HD so I was told to go home and get the bike after the parts turned up and with the help of the service manual and Scotty's pictures the build started. One of the young guys at work spun the spanners and I TA'ed. He bolts together the 2400hp chev we race but had never worked on a HD before...so far all seems to be straight forward.
I ordered a chrome kit after the other bits and thats probably a week away still so things will come to a sudden halt monday.
After pulling the exhaust off I am now considering adding a pipe to the build. I am thinking big radius 2-1. I know the fatcat is a popular pick too but always looks low to me.
the quiet achiever hey Surly
seen an 88 with 103 kit leave Frasers yesterday, think he said pony's were around 110 or thereabouts but don't quote me.... left rubber at workshop and then at every turn only way to treat a mates bike
or the new V&H Competition Series..... looks smick on the softie at the Quindaning ride photos .... www.vanceandhines.com/product_zoom/st-0008-competition/competition.html
pics on the V&H site show a shorter pipe that what I saw in Crashers pics!!!
Everything but the exhaust has been done and have put 60km on it.
So far I am very impressed with the gains. I still haven't been beating up on it, probably only been to 3500rpm and no full throttle. If there is this much more top end it will be a great ride.
Hopefully we did everything right and no strange noises so far.
More reports as it gets bedded in and used harder.
Bang for your buck's !!!
I was reading about this product in Volume 39 No 7 "Hot Bike Magazine" (05/06/07) today. It's a re-usable, washable oil filter that they fitted to a stock 07 Road Glide, dyno run's after fitment showed an increase of 9hp and 9.5 ft-lb of torque ! (not a paid advertisement) Seem's pretty good for a couple of hundred green back's ??? Let us know what you think ?

I noticed Bobtail had put a chrome kit on his red softail standard and since then had thought it would be a great look for mine.
Seeing as I was removing almost all of the pieces in the chrome kit I saw it as a perfect time to do the kit.
Hi Surly,
that's a great job youv'e done with the bike mate, congrats, the chrome kit sets it of well. Very interesting with the 103 kit, I will give that some serious consideration too.
I managed to have a look at Jason's stainless V&H 2:1 pipes, they look and sound very nice and seem to perform. Only drawback is the fact that they don't have heat shields, best not to be wearing nylon or rubber anything. Jason has a couple of sets for sale, they are a discontinued line in the USA.
Still waiitng for my exhaust to arrive but have now done about 250km. All I can say is thank you to those that suggested this combo
The bike is great fun to ride and gets off the line very sharply. I havent had it on the dyno but would believe the magic 100/100 is close if not bettered.
My 2000 Hayabusa was on the dyno some years ago and the graph is as below:
As can be seen the bike had 160 rwhp at this time. If you ask the average busa rider if the bike is fast without wringing its neck everywhere they will answer (if they are honest) yes it is. I was looking at this graph and realised that my softail probably has more average power and torque upto 6000 rpm now than the hayabusa had
great to see another nice build being done in the shed , ull be happy i recon mate
check out A/F ratio on than that bussa
I have the big radius 2-1 on the bike now. I left the last map in it and I will give Stix's other suggestion a go on the weekend. The bike a has a slight stumble on light cruise at the moment but pulls hard further up and sounds great.
I am not a fan of loud pipes and while the big radius 2-1 is louder than the quiet SE slip ons by a mile it seems a lot quieter than the SEII slip ons I had on my street bob.
Here is a short clip of a start up and idle. This is probably as cammy as the bike gets with the lope reducing greatly once the bike is warm

I swapped over to map 492 in the thundermax and gave that a go...then came back and put the right numbers in so that the speedo was calibrated...and the 6th gear light came on
Take two...I headed out to Bindoon to enjoy the bakery Sunday morning. The BR 2-1 is a touch loud for me below 100kph then almost magically it goes silent.
In 6th gear the bike requires 120kph or ~2850 rpm before it pulls happily. At 100kph or ~2400 rpm it pulls harder than stock but still requires a downshift for rapid overtaking. In fifth it overtakes very happily indeed thank you very much. Following on from my busa comparison above 6th gear with a busa is the same overall ratio as 4th gear with the softail. In 4th gear my softail now rolls on very impressively it just runs out of legs long before the busa would.
I am not sure if it is the fat torque curve or just sheer change from the bike since stock but it is now a real fun bike to ride
When you are heeled up crasher we will do some of that scientific research
It was good to get a comparison but I saw what happened when I overtook you so decided it would be safer for Mr&Mrs Beeza if I hung back
Now I just need to sort the bloody efi map out.
