the first service SHOULD be materials cost only but it usually isn't unless you include that in the purchase deal

Ditch the dealer, they don't do half the things they are charging you for, and find a good local motor cycle mechanic. If you have some basic mechanic skills you can carry out most services yourself.

+1 there....At 16,000km you should really be doing your own service. Or send it down to me and I'll do it for $300 and smile a lot!

You said "your new" is that new as in still under warranty or just new to you.

If new to you and out of warranty, a service should cost ....

Some time on youTube looking at how to adjust your clutch, belt and chain (surprisingly easy)
Some cleaner and oil for your air cleaner (if its re-usable) new filter if not.
New oil filter (funny enough HD seems the cheapest $12ish)
Oil (some use Mobil 1 V twin in all holes. (but do your own homework on that one) and
    2 spark plugs.

Some might do brake fluid but how often do you do your brakes on your car??

At least here in Adelaide, Peter Stevens don't do minor and major servicing, they only do the big one even if your service book says different.
Therefore my next service is a DIY.

What could possibly to go wrong..........................

My Road King is getting on a bit but I have never paid anyone to service it. I use Mobil 1 V twin in all the holes and it's not hard to tinker with the rest in between enjoying the rides. It does not however have all the fucking electronics with which the late models are plagued, just fuel injection. I guess if that gives me any grief I have a mate a kilometre away who is a bike mechanic (retired) who is only too happy to help.
