    Hey Guys,
I've got an 88 softail. Yesterday When I was turning it off from the ignition switch it had sparks come from it then it started to smoke. I disconnected the battery straight away. Today I fitted a new switch and connected up the battery but there doesn't seem to be any power coming to the switch.
I checked the main circuit breaker had power and was all good. Where else should I be looking?
I'm not real clued up on electrics.
    Cheers Jack

I would allso invets in a service manual as they have the wiring schematics in them.

yep, Power is on both sides of the circuit breaker.
I've got an online manual but it isn't the best, cant make out the writing on it. I'll invest in a hard copy soon. Where can I get one from?

I had smoke come from the Switch and had to replace a lot of the wiring recently. 84 EVO.

I just ran a temporary wire from the main circuit breaker to the switch and it worked. Looks like the main wire has burnt out somewhere or is there another fuse in line?

Got it all sorted now. It ended up burning out the connection in the plug from the switch to the main wiring harness.

You should also mention to a loved one that they need to buy you a gremlin bell, this will solve all your problems!

Hey jack I have an 87 softail that kept cutting out, turned out the connector plate under the ignition had come adrift from the locating lugs, just another joy of older bikes.

Yeah I do like the older bikes. Being my first Harley I didn't really know what I was in for but after pulling it half apart I found they are really quite basic in design and are an easy bike to work on. I wouldn't have a clue about injection and all the electrics that go with it on the more modern bikes.
Thanks guys I really appreciate the help and advice fellow members on this site provide.
